      Waking yourself on purpose

      Hi,

Had only the second and most extraordinary LD of my life recently. Promted me to get online and find out more about this. I recently found that SP is a real symptom and not just me being mental or something. I have frequent cases of SP, often quite distressing, but since i found out more about it i try to just ride it out.

Anyway, never knew about the connection between the two, very interesting

My Question to you regards waking up from Lucid dreams. This morning in the midst of a LD i heard my house phone ringing in the background. It was a call i was expecting, and i knew this while dreaming. I tried waking myself up by jumping in front of oncoming traffic! -didn't work. I woke when the person called my mobile next to me, and confirmed they had been ringing my house phone for ages.

How can I wake myself up???

      Cheers

Hi, I can usually wake my self up by just willing my self to.

      Maybe you should try it.

I've never tried running infront of trafic before, if you didn't wake up then what happened? Did you die in the dream?

Hello there jaws104, & welcome to the forum!
Great work on conquering your fear of SP!! Keep it up!!
I wouldn't try to wake up from one, unless I really had to. I wouldn't even answer the phone yesterday afternoon, while I was napping!! To wake yourself up, yell for yourself to wake up, & try to imagine yourself in bed. Most of the time, it works, but you could end up in a FA!!
      Try it though!!

When I want to wake up from a dream, I just close my (dream) eyes. I used this a lot when I was younger and had nightmares, always worked perfectly. Haven't tried this on purpose while lucid though, right now I'm grateful for every second of lucidity I get . But I did it accidentaly in my first lucid dream, in excitement I mistook it for a dream stabilisation technique and woke up.

Thanks for quick replies, some good ideas there and far more practical than attempted suicide!

its hazy now but i think i kinda bounced off the cars, and i'm sure i heard somewhere that you can't die in your dreams..[/quote]

I'm relatively new to the whole lucid dreaming thing, so I don't have a lot of experience with it, however, I used to have a lot of nightmares as a kid, and (through necessity) I managed to perfect the practice of gaining enough lucidity to will myself to wake up. I really don't know how to describe the process, other than focusing intently on the idea that the "you" in your dream is not the real you. Try to move your actual, physical arm, not just the dream one, to stimulate wakefulness. Or just close your eyes and start thinking as hard as you can about what's happening outside of your dream. Just some ideas, they seem to work for me.

P.S. On the note of dream suicide, a friend of mine (who mastered lucid dreaming in under a month, darn him) needed to wake up one time but couldn't will it to happen. His solution: shoot himself. He materialized a gun in his top dresser drawer, put it to his temple, and fired. Creepy? I think so.

Sometimes people find that if you should out your name, ti will wake you up. Try calling to your real body that you have to get up.

      SUGGESTIONS FOR WAKING YOURSELF UP

Things that have worked for me in the past; when I am LD'ing and may not like the way things are going, or I want to repeat a scene that was fun, pleasurable,or interesting, I give a command; e.g. 'stop', 'repeat/rewind', or my favorite to do, 'switch scene'. It always works for me. It extends the dream or allows multiple themes within the dream. I think it and it becomes so. If, while LD'ing, I become aware of a physical stimulus affecting my body in reality, I simply command, 'wake up' and I'm awake. Relax and go with the flow. Your brain wants to help you. Think it and it will happen. Enjoy the movie!!! We'll talk later.
