      New lucid dreamer

Hello, I'm new to lucid dreaming. I think I've had an LD in the past but I don't think I knew what it was. I often have sleep paralysis when I'm trying to sleep. Usually I'm pretty frightened by it, but over the years I've learned to accept that it will never go away. And now I think it's more of a good thing since it is apart of becoming lucid. Correct me if I'm wrong. Th only experience I think I cold consider lucid was one I had when I was in high school. I went into sleep paralysis one night. I'm not sure why this always happens to me. But once I go in it is very hard to get out, and I often hallucinate behind my eyelids and when I open my eyes I see black figures standing above. So I try not to open my eyes. I have to will myself out but it's not always possible. Anyway! I went to sleep this night and fell into sleep paralysis. I couldn't get out at first, but then finally I stood up and went into the living room and started watching tv and tryig to talk to my mom in order to calm me down. In only a few minutes I realized that I was still in my bed staring at my celing. And then I realized noone was even home at the time but I swore that I was seeing an talking to my mom on our couch. It was a very foreign experience to me. Is that sorta like becoming lucid?
I've been reading up here on the site and I've got a dream journal, but I haven't had any breakthroughs in lucid dreaming yet. I'm hoping to get to know some people and to be able to have LD's on a regular basis.

Welcome to the forum, slamdunk. Sounds like you may have had a false awakening - a pretty common experience that can lead to LDs. For more info about the specifics, check out the tutorials (as nesgirl suggested). If you have any other questions, please let us know!

Whats up, man? Welcome to Dream Views.

You know, I actually don't consciously experience sleep paralysis all too much, but I know how common it is. Burns was right about the False Awakening, though. Be prepared for those, because they can be notable cues for lucidity.

Along with the tutorials, a lot of us have public Dream Journals that you can read to get a feel of what we experience. Here's a link to mine if you ever find yourself interested.

All of my lucid experiences are in blue, so it makes it a little easier to skim through it and see what it's all about.

Lucidity is simply knowing that you're dreaming, and all of the possiblities that come along with that. It's a strange thing to experience. Usually, your only experience of a dream is waking up after it and having to Remember your dream. (this being true only if you've Never had a lucid dream) But, when you realize you're dreaming, while you're dreaming, its like waking up Inside Of The Dream, While the dream is actually happening.

Imagine if I told you, right now, that nothing around you was Physical. It was all a construct of your mind, and if you could "Free Your Mind" (in matrix terms) and except that as fact, you could change the world around you however you like, or examine your surroundings more closely and find out more about your inner self.

That's what lucid dreaming is like.

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.
