Some memories you've had for years about certain events could have not actually taken place in waking life, but were actually dreams that implanted the experience and you've just accepted it as something that actually happened in your life because you've always had the memory, when it fact it occured only in a dream.

Just a thought.

Funny. This reminded of a particular memory. When I was about 5 years old, I had this "girlfriend" (obviously, this was just a name we'd agreed upon, like I said, we were 5), and I remember some specific moments where I was talking with her.
The thing is. I really don't remember playing with her at all as a kid apart from these few memories, which makes no sense at all.
This has made me think it might just have been a dream (or multiple dreams) that I once had, and to this day, I'm not sure whether these memories are from waking life or from my sleep.

Hope that made sense... O.o
