You have to do FILD exactly before you fall asleep. It's quite hard to know when to start the process because if you start to late the risk is that you fall asleep.

Just try a few times more, and try to start moving your fingers just when you start to get real close to sleeping.

Indeed, the FILD can be rather difficult. I tried it when I had just woken up from a dream, and it worked perfectly, I have yet to try it a few other times. I'm going to try one tonight actually, hopefully it goes well.
