Hiya there mkauf. Well, I don't know how much you've read already, but the technique you're referring to is WILD - I've had some success with this method myself.
The key is not to be "energised" but just to let your body and your mind fall asleep while retianing a small kernal of awarenss. You can do this by counting, or focussing on your body, or other techniques. There's a few good tutorial in the tutorials subforum.
As for deep sleep - what you should do is not to try and WILD straight when you go to bed. Combine WILD with a WBTB, so go to sleep for 5 hours or so, wake up, stay awake for half an hour, THEN try to wild. You won't likely have much success if you try it when you first go to bed, because you have to last through that 40-minute plus deep sleep. If you do it with a WBTB later on in the night, then you get very little deep sleep and longer REM periods.
