When you sleep, you alternate between two main types of sleep. Non-REM, and REM. In non-REM, your brain is more inactive, and doesn't really dream, and in REM, your brain is about as active as when you're awake, and you're dreaming. In WILD, you have to stay conscious through the non-REM sleep, until you enter REM and begin to dream.
When you first go to sleep, the REM periods start out short, and they get longer throughout the night, and when you first go to sleep, you go through a fairly long non-REM period. This means that if you want to WILD at the start of sleep, you have to wait longer, making it much harder to reach REM, and when you do reach REM, the REM period is only about ten minutes. And even then, you're far less likely to remember it in the morning because you'll have another 7 hours or so of sleep before you wake up for the day, during which you're far more likely to forget it than if the LD was a couple hours before you wake.
However, if you wake up about four hours of sleep to WILD, you are at a point in the sleep cycle where you have less non-REM sleep to sit through, the next REM cycle will be much longer, and there's much less time in which to forget things, which is why people generally advise against WILDing before sleep.
