Keeping a dream journal has many uses, some of them are:

  • Getting better at remembering dreams
  • Getting your mind used to thinking about or considering the dream state
  • Recognising recurring themes or strange occurrences you can later use as dream signs (events in your dream that you recognise as only being possible in a dream, therefore triggering lucidity)
  • Recording your dream straight after it has happened allows you to remember it, as your dream recall drops considerably even 10 minutes after you wake up
