      Nightmares during lucid dreaming

I've just started trying to get lucid dreams. But I'm kind of scared because my friend says that having lucid nightmares is the worst experience you can have. I think that the fear of a nightmare is holding me back! Any advice or insight on the subject? TY

      Hey, to DreamViews.

I've never had a lucid nightmare but I would think that it wouldn't be too bad. If you are lucid then you know it is just a dream and that nothing can harm you. Comparing this to a normal nightmare where you are believing that it is real makes the lucid one look good. Plus if you are lucid then you will probably have control and be able to change the dream as you'd like. Alot of people like to be in scary situations in lucid dreams because it's like an ultra realistic video game.

Lucid dreaming is great fun so don't let the possibility of nightmares hold you back from experiencing it.

      Welcome to Dream Views.

Forget about nightmares. Instead focus all of your attention on the awesome positive things that you can do in a lucid dream. Read through the lucid tasks here, it's loaded with all sorts of things you can intend to dream about.

And I also would have given the same answer as ThePhobiaViewed.

I have never had a lucid nightmare. And I have also noticed that I have far fewer nightmares in non lucids since learning about lucidity. It's like my brain is now always aware on some level that I'm dreaming, and things just seem to work themselves out so much more easily now.

I have had lucid nightmares, but only following sleep paralysis which is an entirely different animal. I've never had a non-lucid nightmare so I can't compare, but I don't see how lucidity would make it any worse.

Maybe this came from the idea that lucid dreams are more vivid than normal ones, and therefore nightmares would be more scary?

But I agree, ignoring SP it doesn't stand up to scrutiny. Even if you're not able to control the nightmare, just knowing that it's a dream makes it much less of a nightmare.

I was in a thread a while back for people who had discovered LDs on their own, and we were thinking that many people probably discover LDs as a way of dealing with nightmares.

Two instances I came across online also spring to mind. You can find them by searching
Google: lucid nightmare faced up to witches
Google Books: nightmare lucid dreaming old enough

I have had many nightmares, but lucid and non-lucid. When I have a normal nightmare I believe the danger is real. I wake up paniced and feeling traumatized. When I have a lucid nightmare I know it is not real. I am either able to watch it happen from a calm, sort of detached place, or I can change it completely so that it is no longer a nightmare.

Are your nightmares from a 3rd person perspective? I have a friend I'm trying to help get over those and need some tips.
