First off, welcome to Dream Views! I think you'll find it a great community with a lot of helpful folks. Yes, lucid dreaming is 100% real. I had a lucid dream just last night, in fact.
And yes, once lucid you can control every aspect of your dream. If you can think of it, you can do it/be it/create it. Some people have difficulty with total control at first, but just remember this: it's all you. All you have to do is know that you have complete control, because there is no reason you shouldn't—after all, you don't have any problem making your arm bend, do you? It's no different. As the Nike ads say, "Just do it!"
As for tips, the best tip I can give you for attaining lucidity, is to examine every aspect of your day for anything the least bit out of place, over the next several days and on. If you notice anything strange, promptly do a reality check. My favorite of these is the nose-hold, where you simply pinch your nose like you're about to go underwater and try to breathe. If you can breathe through your pinched nose, there you have it, you're dreaming. This way, when you're dreaming and notice something out of place (and in dreams, lots of things are often out of place) you stand a good chance of doing a reality check, as it will have become a habit. In doing so, you will realize you are dreaming, and thus become lucid.
Other than that, I'll just point you to the Tutorials section of the forum. probably the best to check out first are the three stickied topics at the top of the topic list. Good luck, and happy lucids!
