I think you were heading the right way, but you opened your eyes too early. Before you reach REM, you'll probably have HIs (hypnogogic imageries) and other clues that you have reached the dream state.
WILD stands for Wake-Induced Lucid Dreaming, and is when you go from awake to dreaming with no change in your conscious state. You let your body fall asleep, but your mind remains aware of everything that is happening. Eventually your body enters REM sleep and you can take the awareness that you have and begin the lucid dream.
Anyway, my explanation is probably a bit confusing. A good place for you to start reading is the Tutorials Section. There are 4 different WILD tutorials in there that will help you understand it better. You can also use the Search Function to help you find more threads relating to the subject.
Also, keep in mind that WILD is a pretty advanced technique. Although some people may be able to do it with ease, most people have a difficult time getting a successful WILD. It won't hurt if you try to WILD, but you should also try alternative methods for getting a lucid dream. Another thing, keep in mind that you will probably have an easier time trying to WILD when used with WBTB (Wake-Back to Bed). There's a tutorial on it also on the tutorials section.
Just out of curiosity, how is your dream recall?
Well, I hope this helps. Good luck on your dreaming.
