      Scared

I'm scared a little bit... I'm all excited about having lucid dream, but I'm scared that if I do a certain reality check, I'll freak out. Especially about looking in a mirror because I heard it could show up as being freakishly distorted. How can I get over this "fear"?

Welcome to DV. I think everyone at one time or another has felt this fear, being in an alternate reality can certainly be frightening, however looking in the mirror isn't the only reality check available. A very good one is to plug your nose and they attempt to breathe in. If you can breathe, then bam, you're dreaming. Looking at your hands is also a good one, however they can look distorted so it would be better to do the nose test until you feel completely comfortable with dreaming.

      Good luck.

Memory reality check has no distortions. Simple think back over what you've done for the past few hours or how you got to the place that you are. If there are gaps in your memory then you are dreaming.

In my experience mirrors don't distort you too much.

I think that the more you learn about lucid dreaming and talk to others about it, the more your fears may melt away. And even if that doesn't happen a simple an unobtrusive reality check to do is simply will yourself to levitate. If you lift from the ground (or whatever you're on) you're dreaming. After that take the time to look at everything in the dream. I like to run my hand over dream grass if it's present. That really helps to ground me in a lucid dream.

No need to be afraid. Its true that the point of a reality check is to make something weird happen, but I don't think I've ever been scared of the outcome. Normally, I'm so excited, I do it over and over like an idiot.

It may sound scary to put your finger through your hand, but when you actually do it, there is no fear, only confidence that you can do anything you want.

For example, one time I did a reality check where I pulled my finger back until it snapped off. Sounds horribly scary now, but at the tiime, it felt totally normal. I liked it so much, I did it over and over with all my fingers.

Thanks for the consolation! Now I'm excited for my first LD! Can't wait 'til it happens.
