When starting out, it's best to first work on your recall. Start a dream journal where every morning you write down all the dreams you can remember. Recall is essential for some methods of inducing LD's like DEILD or FILD. While working on recall, try a variety of lucid inducing methods. WBTB is my favorite, but experiment to find what's best for you. Check the tutorial archive to find a lot of good info. And read this:

It's full of valuable information about inducing lucid dreams. Other than that, be patient and keep at it. Good luck!

Also reality checks are very important. Basically they involve regularly checking to see if you're dreaming while you're awake until it becomes a habit. Eventually out of habit you will start doing reality checks in dreams as well, causing you to become lucid. I suggest you read this guide, it lists many common reality checks. I especially recommend number eleven from the list of reality checks in that guide, as it's worked very well for me.

NOT What he said. If it becomes habit, you won't even notice or will be VERY sceptical when it actually works. Only RC when something weird happens, so it's actually a reality check and not Hourly Nose Pinching Time.
What if I told you that I am dreaming right now?
That your whole life is a lie?
That the laws of physics as you know them are incorrect?

Furthermore, what would you do if I told you I'm going to wake up as soon as you finish reading my signature?

I didn't say it had to be an unconcious habit, you can still pay attention to what you're doing if you do it habitually, as long as you remember to make the thoughts as much a part of the habit as the actions. Plus, not all dreams involve strange things, so just reallity checking out of habit will help you become lucid in the dreams where there are no strange things, or where they aren't obvious enough to notice. Random reality checking has caused me to become lucid enough that I wouldn't discount it.

You do have a good point though, I did forget to mention that it's also important to reality check when you see something strange, as that's also caused me to become lucid lots of times. I just think it's better to have both.

Did you KNOW it was a dream, WHILE you were having it?
