Help? My Lucids dreams are BORING.

Hi there. This is a very cool community and I'm glad to be a part of it.

A little background on where I'm at:
Before coming here and lurking a bit I had had some lucid dreams in the past, but they were very random and always brief. It was a long time ago too.
I've been increasing my dream recall every night with a dream journal. thanks to this I can remember my dreams almost every night.

My first self induced lucid dream was a very cool experience, but it was quite brief.

      Here's my problem:
I've managed to induce a lucid dream on about 6 occasions now, using different WBTB variations.
The problem is once I get there I have almost no control. I realize I'm dreaming, then I try to do something interesting and whatever it is just doesn't work.
I've tried to create characters, but they fade away. If I try to make someone do something it doesn't seem to work.

Last night I used some reality checks after a WBTB to get lucid. I remember thinking:
"Alright, I know I'm dreaming, now just don't get too excited and try stuff out."

I remember some suggestions that I should try to make a portal to get to other places, so I tried to open a hole in the wall. Nothing happened.
So I found a mirror and I decided to try to step through it.

I remember hearing that having confidence helps your control, so I psyched myself up a little by telling myself that I can do whatever I want. Then I puffed out my chest and stepped into the mirror. I just smacked right into it. It's pretty funny now, but at the time I was quite disappointed.

So what are some things I can do to start doing more than just walking around my house?

Don't worry too much about dream control. People say it gets easier the more lucids you have. I've found it seems to be sort of random. Some dreams I have great control, and others it feels so real and stable, I am unable to do anything. I think it is mainly your attitude and viewpoint in the dream.

There are tons of dream control tutorials floating around the site. It makes sense that everyone has a different approach. After all, everyone has different beliefs and illusions to break through.

Try a simple task to start, so you can build confidence and change your beliefs and attitude. Maybe practice the task while awake as part of your RC routine. Visualize what it would be like and how cool it would feel.

You can always pick a task from the Task of the Month forums:

Reading how different people accomplished the task might give you some good ideas and help you visualize the possibilities.

that tidbit about blending it in as part of your waking RC is a great idea. I never thought of that, it would probably help tremendously.
I am the beast within myself...

      Hi!

This is most likely happening because you expect it too. Maybe you're looking at the whole thing too "technically". Getting psyched up was a good idea, but you were doing it because you were unsucessful, which could be seen as frustration. And that never helps me, in "real life" even.
If I were you I'd keep trying. But start anew. Go for the "just do it" technique, if you can call it a technique. So next time don't ask yourself how to do it, just do it. Sorry if this seems unhelpful.
If your sucess doesn't increase, then maybe something is wrong. Well not that bad, but maybe you need some more visualization skills. I don't know how understood the whole unconscious-conscious relationship is. But from my experience, the general LDing community values visualization as an important aspect in dream control.

      Hope I helped, good luck!

Control can take time to learn, my lucid dreams were usually boring for quite a while as well. What I did was try things that are possible in real life, but dangerous, like jumping of buildings, or walking through fire, or trying to breathe under water. After you do enough things like that, it's easier to convince yourself that you can do stranger things, like walking through mirrors.

      Thanks for the responses guys.
      Maybe I'm trying too hard.

I'll try taking small steps at first.
I'll keep practicing I'll see how it goes.
I don't mind being patient if I have to be.

I'll let you guys know if I defeat any supervillains.
