Welcome to Dream Views, Hera.

It's called Hypnagogic Imagery, and it can be a great way to induce lucidity.

The difference between HI and lucid dreaming is that HI usually consists of fleeting images or sounds. They can be pretty immersive, at times, but are usually much less static than full-blown dreams. Lucid dreaming happens when you are fully dreaming. It can be just as realistic (or even much more vivid) than real life. At a good level of lucidity, it feels just like you feel when you're awake.

At times, it's almost impossible to distinguish between the dream state and the awakened state - you just have the hunch that you're dreaming.

At other times, though, it can feel "hyper-real" (You can feel the trees around you as if they are a part of you; etc), and your emotions run much more deeply than they do while you're awake. It can be the most exhilarating thing you've ever felt.
