One hypothesis by a popular member, Billybob, suggested that this was the case in his WILD tutorial(s). I've never come across anything scientific suggesting that this is actually true, and prior to his tutorial being posted in Dream Views I never noticed anyone really talk about these 'signs'- not regular posters, and not members posting WILD tutorials and guides.
I personally don't give the idea much merit, but people seem to love it and if it helps them on their way to WILDing because they think they've stayed awake past a certain point, good for them. On the other hand, just because there is no evidence or, most likely, that I personally haven't come across such evidence, doesn't mean that this isn't the case. Maybe he's on to something that no one has researched yet. Maybe I'm just not reading the right articles (doubtful though, there is not a whole lot out there and I have a lot of the popular literature on lucid dreaming and sleep and hypnagogia and still have not come across this. If anyone DOES know of articles where this is discussed please let me know the title!!), or maybe there are some not written in English.
Still, Billybob is an accomplished WILDer and I am not. I'd listen to his word over mine, even if it isn't true, because the ultimate goal of the average person is to learn to WILD, not to analyze every minuscule detail of hypnagogia.
