Was this a lucid dream or just a nightmare?

      Hello everyone,
I am new to this place. I don't know much about lucid dreaming, but I would like to learn. I'm not sure if I have had a lucid dream in the past, due to I don't remember most of my dreams. However, about 3 or 4 days ago I did have one dream.

I wrote some of it down and I still think of parts frequently. In my dream (and please don't mind if I add comments in between the story):

I was laying in my room and my dad came in and we started to argue. One thing led to another and he left the room. Some time later I find myself outside walking away. I stopped for a pack of gum and I asked the counter person if they had been busy, and she replied quite rudely "no, shouldn't you be back in bed". ( When talking, it was like I was talking while I was awake. Ex:moving my lips)

I'm not quite sure what happened after that. But last I remeber I was back at my school and I was climbing up the side of it. I had no rope or anything, it was like I was Spiderman.

Next I was in the field next to the school. Everyone (students and teachers) were coming at me. I was kind of spazzing out and yelling at everyone to get back. They couldn't control me and next I remember getting tackled to the ground and I had people restraining me.

I tried to wake up (due to the fact I was crying), but I couldn't move. It was like I was frozen in place. It freaked me out pretty bad. Once I was able to get up I couldn't fall back asleep or lay down comfortably.

I am not sure if this was a lucid dream or just a nightmare. Could someone clarify this? It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

      Very simple:

We're you aware of dreaming in your dream?

In a way, yes I was aware that I was dreaming.

When i have a Lucid Dream (only had a "real" one once, but i also had some short ones), i feel a unique feeling. It's unexplainable and even when i think about it i almost cry. Maybe it's just me, i can easily tell if a dream was lucid or not. I feel so completely different. Sorry, it's unexplainable

If you were aware of the fact that it was a dream, then you were having a lucid dream. Remember to be a lucid dream you just have to know you are dreaming, to control a dream once it becomes lucid, is another story.

Lucid dreaming can simply be defined as: the awareness that one is dreaming. This does not mean that you have to have all sorts of control, that the dream has to be vivid, or that you have to have superpowers or anything. Like Frishert mentioned, "were you aware that you were dreaming?"

Secondly, to increase your recall of dreams, keep a dream journal. It's good that you wrote this dream down. Write down EVERY detail you can think of. Review your dream journal, love your dream journal, sleep with your dream journal and shower with your dream journal! Well, maybe not that, but, keep one. It can be an actual notebook or a file on your computer, or even a thread in the Dream Journal section of the site.

Next, take a look at the tutorials section of the site. It will help you with a lot of the basics. You can also ask around the forums. Any of us will be more than happy to answer your questions!

      Good luck dreaming!

Heh, showering with your DJ doesn't seem like such a great idea, no ;p. But you get the drift.

They actually have these water-proof journals at a bookstore near where I live, so if someone really wanted to shower with their dream journal...

Yeah, no problem! If you're worried about losing your dream journal, either keep it with you at all times, or make sute it has a specific spot in your bedroom where it goes everytime you're done using it. This can be a side table, headboard, or under your mattress. Anything works, as long as you can find it later!

I have been using the "Notes" feature on my cell phone. Since I always have it near, it is easy to access
