I had lucid dreams throughout my entire childhood (I just didn't know what they were called) and so did my sister. Neither of us had any "evil beings" come in and control our dreams. Now, I'm having lucid dreams again, and still, nothing has happened. This entire community is made up of people who havn't had anything happen to them, so we are all a testament to the safety of lucid dreaming!
Your mom may be thinking about sleep paralysis (SP), in which people can have hallucinations of all sorts, be they visual or audio. In some cultures, they thought that this was an evil spirit or a witch taking control of their bodies, when really it's a natural occurence. It happens for a short time (anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes), and some people don't even have the hallucinations when they go into SP. Some people even induce SP to WILD. It is harmless.
You also need to know that you're the one in conrol of your dreams, otherwise you won't be in control, and "bad things" could happen. However these "bad things" are only things like a regular nightmare. NOTHING can hurt you when you're dreaming. You won't die while having a dream, lucid or not (unless you're really old and die in your sleep, or have an epileptic siezure in your sleep...both of which could happen any time anyway).
If your mom is still worried, just have her do some research on lucid dreaming. She'll see pretty soon that it's harmless. My mom didn't want me to start, but soon she came around to the idea. She still thinks I'm wierd, but she accepts that I do it, and knows that it's perfectly safe. It may take time (it took me over a month to convince my mom), but she'll probably come around. If she dosn't... get back to us. Good Luck!
