First, you need to start your own dream journal, it improves your dream recall a lot (
This is a great DJ software made by a DV member

). For insomnia, it really helps me to do my exercise right before sleep (100 push ups and 100 sit ups) and maybe some warm herb tea

Then you need to start doing reality checks all day. Don't be persuaded that you are awake. In dreams, you too think that you aren't dreaming, so every time you remember to, try breathing with your nose pinched, putting your finger through your palm and observe the enviroment, if something isn't weird. Try to remember how you got to where you currently are, what you were doing before etc. Looking at your hands is good too, in the dream they are often crooked, crippled or missing. Then, when you go to sleep, repeat in your mind something like "I will remember my dreams" for recall or "I'll do a reality check and realize, that I'm dreaming." for LDs. This is called MILD (mind induced lucid dream). When you can't fall asleep, try listening to
this.
That's pretty much everything I do, hope it helps.
