      Hi from Scotland.

Hi there, I’m new here. I was given this URL by someone on another forum, because I was speaking about having sleep paralysis. I get this A LOT and it’s quite distressing to me because I don’t understand what it is and why I’m having it. [possible irrelevant info: I’m 21].

So far this site is quite interesting. Dreams interest me, although I have to admit I don’t remember much of my own but when I do they are soooo real that I actually believe I’ve done what I’ve done in the dream!

The sleep paralysis: I see this hooded reaper like thing either sitting in the corner of my bedroom, or it comes at me slowly, laughing or pointing. It sometimes attacks me and I can’t breathe.

A lot of people tell me that I am quite active whilst still asleep. I shout, talk, get up, walk around, climb over things, I even eat food in my sleep -chuckles-…

I day dream A LOT too…just switch off, go to different places, meet people I’ve never seen before do things I would love to do…at one stage I thought I was going crazy but apparently it’s a good thing? Wow. Makes me feel less mental! =]

I was wondering if this is significant to anything?

I have Insomnia and have had it since I was 3 years old [first diagnosed] sleep disorders are common in my family, Insomnia being the most common and Narcolepsy.

I am new to this dream thing but always wondered what it is about, does anyone have any answers?

      Thanks =]

      Tc.

As far as I know, when you try to fight Sleep Paralysis, you enter a mixed state of imagination and reality. Therefore, you are seeing your reality as well as your imagination, being the hooded reaper.

Try not to fight the SP and start visualizing a dream you'd like to have. Replay it over and over again until you're asleep. If oyu're already paralyzed, you'll be out in 30 seconds or so, and will probably become lucid.

If you wake up, do nothing. Don't turn, don't open your eyes.

      Hey man, welcome to DV!

I don't know that much about sleep paralysis, but i sure hope you get some good help
As to why you are having it...
You're sleeping disorders are probably what's causing it... If you could get more sleep you probably wouldn't suffer from it. Maybe you should talk to your doctor about it
You could also talk to your family about it. You say sleeping disorders are in the family, then i think it's very likely that some of your family members also have dealt with sleep paralysis.

If i remember correctly i think that our body's become paralysed while we sleep,so that when we dream and make moves in our dreams,we would not make those moves in our bed... What's happening to you is that your mind wakes up before your body wakes up... And so your body is still paralysed whilest your mind is half awake. I think that's what causes the hallucinations like the grim reaper and the loud weird noises and stuff... Because you're still half dreaming.

I myself have had sleep paralysis to on multiple occacions.
Mostly when i had it i tried inducing it onto myself and it was very light, just feeling that i'm not able to move, and hearing loud noises,or thinking that my mom has come inside and talking to me while she wasn't...

But the first time i had it i didn't know anything about SP and lucid dreaming.
It was really the most frightening experience i had in my life... I was afraid to go to sleep again for days...
I woke up and i couldn't move, and there was a person sitting besides my bed, i tried yelling for my parents but i couldn't make any sound... After a while i noticed the person stayed very calm so i stopped yelling...
And then he just raised his arm and pointed towards the foot of my bed, where i saw a huge hooded grim reaper
So i screamed again and couldn't make a sound or move, and i breathed very heavy. I closed my eyes wishing it to go away and opened em again and it was still there... Then i did it again and it was gone...
I just got out of bed and whent downstairs and stayed up all night, afraid to go into my room again.
And i was afraid to go to sleep again for days...

Also, try not to go to sleep on your back... Sleeping on your back should increase chances of having SP

Yeah. I've had a dream without SP before. This was just after waking up for school and going back to sleep (ignoring the mother..)

      I ended up punching myself.
