Mmmmm.... how to put this? Shamanism has been around since the very dawn of mankind... the cave paintings at Altamira and Lascaux etc are thought to be relics of shamanism.. as are the very first sculptures etc. In other words... in the beginning, when man first became man, he began to create art... not for aesthetic reasons, but for magic.
And shamanism includes lucid dreaming.
For probably the best in-depth look at how LDing is practiced by shamans, read some Castaneda books. Shamanism is still prevalent in American Indian culture. And it's also essentially the ur-spirituality, from which all others sprang.
And of course, the Buddhist monks are also very expert lucid dreamers.
In fact, as far as I know, just about every ancient culture included LDing in its magic/religious practices. You find it in the aborigines of Australia, who believe that their magic men are literally Dreaming the world into existence moment by moment, and if they stop the entire world will cease to exist...
I believe it's only modern Western culture that has forgotten about the interior world, which is so vitally important in all prehistoric and indigenous cultures (and is actually vitally important period... but we just tend to ignore it).
