A question about not being able to move/suffocating

Firstly, hi, I have recently joined here in the hope I can learn to master lucid dreaming

I remember a month back or so, I had the same reoccuring dream two days in a row (dream or real life I don't know because it was so real, but I presume it was dream) where in the morning, I would wake up, but not be able to move any part of my body, and then once I had realised this, I would not, and I mean really not be able to breathe, like I actually kept thinking to myself "I am actually going to suffocate and die."

The first day this happened, I couldn't open my eyes, so I was literally stuck on my back, arms down by my side, facing upward, not being able to move at all, no matter how hard I tried to move, and suffocating, just not being able to breathe. It felt like it was going on for ages, and I really started getting scared because it felt so real. Then right at the last minute, I would open my eyes, get up and physically gasp for air. At this point I would be fully awake.

The second day this happened and this time I could open my eyes, and I saw my covers over my face, was in the same position and I could not move again or breathe. Right at the last minute again when I thought I was going to die from lack of air, I got up and took in a deep breath.

Just to clarify, the parts where I took in deep breaths at the end were in a fully concious state!

After this second day in a row of this happening, I started to get worried before going to sleep incase this happened again. However, this type of dream has not happened since. One thing I noticed was that these two times this happened, I was sleeping downstairs on the sofa and not in my bed.

I would really appreciate it if anyone could enlighten me about this a little bit. This has been like no other dream I have ever had, and it felt so so so real, it was really stange.

      Well, welcome to DV!
Also, what you experienced was sleep paralysis, I guess that the shock of not being able to move helped with being unable to breath, but don't worry, when you can't move its just SP, try not to get too agitated by it and it will go away.

Hey there, thanks for the response. Can I ask, what stage of sleeping, or what state of mind am I in when I am doing this? Am I awake, but just unable to move or am I asleep, dreaming, possibly being lucid? Thanks. If this ever reoccurs, is there anyway I can harness this and try to change what is happening to something else?

Oh, SP is when your body stays asleep, but you wake up.
Generally, you could use this to induce a WILD (Wake Initiated Lucid Dream), since your body is already asleep.

Ah, I see. Is there a good link on this forum that can explain WILD to me? At the moment I feel totally lost. I have started doing a dream journal and I am trying to have lucid dreams... Where would you recommend I begin?
