Question for the male movie goers among us

Ok.. I 've seen this too many times to think it's just a fluke!

Why do guys (especially teenage guys) sit a seat apart when they go to the movies together??

First they will debate where to sit and then one will go into the row, sit down and his friend will sit in the same row MAKING SURE there is an empty seat between them.

Now.. this is definately a GUY thing as I've NEVER seen girls/women sit this way when they go to the movies together.

Is it a "personal space" thing? A "manly man" doesn't sit next to another guy thing?

      I'd Just like to understand..

No silly. It's because I like don't like to share an arm rest.

Actually me an my friends sit next to each other.

I always sit next to my friends in the cinema. I don't invite someone to the movies and sit apart from them. It would be rude and inconceivable

Maybe it's just people who are insecure about their sexuality that do this? ie. They don't want to be called gay by their peers. Or maybe it's just the arm rest thing, i don't know

This is an extremely interesting inquiry Clarity that not many people feel the need to investigate or explore. I'm glad someone has brought it up.....

I suffer from what would be classified as ‘You don’t enjoy a film at the cinema if you sit next to someone syndrome’. This in my opinion could be classified as a medical condition. I have been doing this for about 10 years and have good reason to continue my idiosyncratic behaviour.

Since I used to go the cinema alone when I was in my teenage years, I used to really enjoy the idea of losing myself in the wonderful comprehension and knowledge of cinema. If I sit next to someone (be it a friend/person i dont know) I really dislike the personal ‘attachment’ process involved in the closeness of cinema seating.

      The idea behind my 'madness' is that if I sat next to someone my experience of immersing myself in the cinema would be spoilt due to many reasons;

      1) The person next to you taking the arm rest,
      2) Their breathing through their nose totally getting in the way of the sound,
      3) When someone moves you can see it in the corner of your eye,
      4) The annoyance of them talking to someone about the plot in a simplified form.

      Personal reasons incluce;

      1) Being able to spread yourself out to relax,
      2) Not becoming consious of every movement you make as not to disturb the person next to you,
      3) Total freedom.......

When I am in a cinema and have to sit next to someone I become Mr. Neurotic.

For me going to the cinema is like meditation, I know it might sound silly, but I love the cinema.

Well, It doesn't seem terribly unreasonable to sit a seat apart, but Clarity, now that you bring it up, I always see guys sitting apart from one another...It's kind of funny, but I guess personal space is an issue for most people. I don't mind if others are up close to me, so I've never thought about it.

Mystical_Journey, I now understand and can totally relate to all of your reasons especially when it comes to sitting next to strangers.

Speaking of strangers, I must be a stranger magnet! I often go to the movies by myself during the day and there can be a whopping 4 people in the theater and one of those 4 will sit either next to me or directly infront or behind me! That REALLY pisses me off!

And what's with public bathrooms.. SKIP a stall will ya!

*pant pant* Ok.. I feel better now!

Aside from Mystical_Journey, this is really a teenage guy phenomenon, not a guy phenomenon. And I don't know but maybe just an American teenage guy phenomenon.

There can be many reasons, but most all boil down to immaturity.

MJ you pretty much summed it up for me as well...however if I notice that the theatre is becoming crowded, I will slide over in order to make room for others.

I've never noticed. I only go to the movies with my family, cousins or friends(and all of my friends are girls). Even so, i've never seen guys doing this.

i'll look next time though, but i pretty much go to the movies twice a year or less..(im not exaggerating)

I sit next to whomever I go to the cinima with, male or female. Personally I think discussing and laughing at the movie as you watch it, pointing out inconsistancies etc. and talking about them in a quiet way just makes the movie more enjoyable. I also like to buy my ticket at the gate for one of the shows playing (but not always) and then peeking into each theatre to see which is most vacant, then go and watch that show. It's great when you and your friend/s are the only ones at the show.

I never seen this either. I have never known anyone to go to the movies and not sit next to the person there with. Now with strangers thats another story. If you don't have to I don't see why you would want to sit next to someone. Other than the stuff above, they can just be annoying(talking a lot). Then again maybe you want to talk during the movie and don't want to bug them. Now if you have to sit next to someone or sit on the ends, I would rather sit next to someone. The ends suck.

One other thing. If you see someone doing that and your not with them, they might just be saving a seat for someone.

OMG should children really be reading that??? I think that is a highly inapropriate thing to say in a board where many of our members are fairly young! I would like to move for paperdoll's post to be deleted or at least edited into saying something more proper, like:

I go and sit with my male friend in the nonsmoking section

      and we DONT SMOKE[/b]
      If I hadn't made me
I'd be more inclined to bow
Powers that be would have swallowed me up
But that's more than I can allow...

why would you just assume I am lying like that???? What do you think you are, psychic??? Just cause you have been here longer than i have does not give you the right to call me a liar, or anyone else for that matter.

I saw a fetus in a jar and it was kind of rotten and it made me think about children in general, and how they live in a decaying society. I took it as one of life's strange little metaphors and it freaked me out. I think we should try and make this world a better place for our children, but not for our childrens' children, cause children should not be having sex...
