i imagine (possibly incorrectly) if one was going to the festival it would have made at least a little more sense. but ive never been praised for my communication skills so...

take 2. what i was trying to ask/say.

Is anyone from dream views going to the culture/arts and self expression festival called 'burning man' (that is held in the black rock desert of neveda in the states otherwise known as the playa) on the 29th of august.

are you volunteering at burning man?
are you in a theme camp at burning man?

ending with an attempt at sarcasm suggesting that metting people from dream views at burning man that might also be going to the festival ruins their avatars, as in now that i know what you look and behave like the mistuique of hiding behind alooping cartoon or a random image.

so, the ultimate question is, either of you going to this Burning Man :: Welcome Home festival?

a very absorbing blog article describing the mentality of the festival here: Burning Blog » Blog Archive » Confused by Burning Man? You’re goddamn right you are!!!

i thought that with many on this site from the states that there would be a few crew going. but doesn't seem so.

hit me with any questions of clarification if needed.

yar me too, being an international guest makes it that much harder to source goodies. will have to make some enquiries in LA before we depart or just prey the 'good time party squad' is at the fest (drawn together reference).

I'm going this year. First time, can't wait. People have tried describing it to me but I still have no idea what to expect, really.

Everything works out in the end, sometimes even badly.

There's about 6 or 7 agencies that send people, including the BLM and that county's police department.

That said don't go handing out drugs to strangers (although it;s quite against the spirit of the event to prevent that) and you'll be fine.

Who's up for a lucid dreaming theme camp?

There's already at least one camp that does seminars on Kung Fu Lucid Dreaming or some crap, I don't remember. I want to start a theme camp for either next year or the year after, but who knows.

People get cited for pot out there and it's a fat fine. Underaged drinkers get cited, bars get cited if they provide to underage drinkers, people even get cited by the health department for shit they're giving away for free. The Law is very real at Burning Man. That being said, it cannot control 80,000 people. Being there, you understand how little power law enforcement actually has over people essentially going out into the desert for a festival/carnival/circus/holiday/religious ceremony.

Though Burning Man is partially a giant rave, it's also good therapy. It's difficult to explain exactly what's going on, and a lot of people go just for the fun parties and never grow wiser to the important tradition taking place. People who think it's just an event to go listen to music and do drugs, or just a big hippy festival, are only depriving themselves. Yes, drugs and other elements of fringe culture will exist in a place celebrating everything too ridiculous for the default world but that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Everything works out in the end, sometimes even badly.

I'm so jealous! I've been to a bunch of Burning Man decomps, but as a college student I am too poor for the actual event

Yes, the people who just go for the party miss out on the underlying message of authoritarian crony capitalism. "No one can sell anything except us" is the Burning Man motto.

Hmmm, I never really thought of it that way. @Omnis Dei, no one is allowed to sell anything in Burning Man for money, you're only allowed to trade items/services, but they charge real money for coffee at their cafe, and for the tickets. They are a non-profit though, so it's not like they're making money from it.

All they sell is ice and coffee. the coffee I don't understand but whatever not a coffee drinker.

Things are not traded, they are given away. This is a purposeful project. If you don't understand it you should read about it. There are no brands allowed, for instance, cause there is no support allowed from the outside. It's all about what kind of shit can you build and take into the desert. It's an art project in sustainable living. Throwing money into this project or even bartering would poison it. Like you said, the money goes to fund the project. There is no profit.

Everything works out in the end, sometimes even badly.

Ice isn't free, and neither is coffee. Perhaps you're referring to the tickets; I understand the basic workings of the event but still there must be some serious expenses involved in the event. How much of that money do you think is going to uncle sam for the use of the land?

You haven't been back to specify exactly what you mean, so perhaps I should wait for that.

Hmm, a couple of my friends went and they said most people bring things (e.g. small handmade things such as keychains, mementos, etc.) to trade for other things. It's not like it's a rule, but they said that most people give something in order to recieve something. Maybe they misunderstood though.

Yeah that's misleading. It's really more about just sharing. You bring in order to share, but there's no bartering.
