Revenge of: Post Your Halloween COSTUMES

Ok it's that time of year again. Nina's costume thread last year was really cool, so we're gonna do it again. If any of y'all are going twick-o-tweating or going to any costume parties this week, take a picture and post it here! Post your carved pumpkins too.

Here's part of my elf costume. Please take note of the ear because I don't know how to make it flush with my real ear. If any of y'all are handy with fake body parts (shush James ) then please lend me your advice, I'd really appreciate it. I'll post the whole deal later this week.

[b]Happy (almost) Halloween have a blast and eat lots of candy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How much is it sticking out?

If it's a small amount (1/16th") or so, you can simply paint it with liquid latex to match-up.

If it's a significant amount, you'll want to putty it and then latex, or actually make a new mold for your ear. I can describe both in detail. (I dated a trekkie for awhile, and as a side money-making gig, I used to go to trek cons and do prosthetics for the geeks. )

I don't want to hear about the brain from someone that doesn't have one.
Nor do I want to hear about evolution from someone that hasn't evolved.

      OT Alert! (And apologies!)

Sure - lots of things I don't know how to do. Let's find one and I'll remedy that, and it'll be a good day!

IMHO - It's all about being fearless. Just think about every time you've thought "hmm, I don't know how to do that" and instead - go do it. As Edison said about inventing the light bulb: [paraphrased]"I never failed. I discovered ten thousand ways that won't work!"

I'm never afraid to discover ten thousand ways that won't work...

I don't want to hear about the brain from someone that doesn't have one.
Nor do I want to hear about evolution from someone that hasn't evolved.

One more reply, then I promise to stop hijacking this thread - it's not a religion thread, after all!!

He (Edison, one of my heroes) also said: "Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work."

      that would be the stuff!

Bajoran nose pieces were my specialty.

You might also need nose putty or modeling wax to do justice to that ear.

Have a look at these guys: http://www.nightmarefactory.com/makeup.html for some supplies (if you don't have a theatrical supply locally)

Basically, you'll model the putty just like clay. It's best to do it on the ear with the prosthetic ear in place. The paint the putty with latex to create 'skin'.

Practice a few times before Halloween. It does take a bit of a knack to get really great results.

Beyond that, you can make a "life mask" in plaster of your face and then from that negative, create whatever prosthetic fx you want, mold it negative, then paint the inside of the mask with liquid latex (remembering to powder it and lay down multiple layers.) Then you can transfer that after it dries as a mask. Any high-built areas will need to be built-up on your face with modeling putty or wax first.

Anyway, lots to cover without knowing how interested you might be.

Also have a look at Spirit Gum : it's the glue you'll need to adhere prosthetics professionally.

None of this stuff is terribly expensive. You can do some amazing FX work for $20 + makeup.

Hey, Kim, do you know Edward from Fullmetal Alchemist?
Yes, this horrible piece of art is mine. I have his whole outfit, minus the arm. And the train.

Do you have any tips on how to make his arm cheap? All the tutorials I've found online require some pretty expensive parts, and I'm a starving artist so that answers that.

I'm a little bit of a Trekkie, though not as much as my dad. I enjoy the shows and I've been to two conventions. I loved the conventions because there were a lot of people there who must have spent months on their costumes. They were very convincing. (Funny note: I bought a squeaky Tribble at one of the conventions and all the guys dressed as Klingons freaked out when I walked by, lol).

      Geeks are fun.

It's really good work LS, I wish I could draw as good as what you consider your worst.

Anyway, I HAVE AN IDEA! Tell me if you think this would work kim: Get just the arm of a storm trooper costume, and paint it silver!!!!! And black on the detail. Well ok, you'd waste money on the storm trroper costume if you only used the arm. But I bet you could find one for not that much money, if it was just made of cheap plastic.

That could work, Blue - *lots* of detail though!

For my money, I'd sculpt it in clay and then mold it in plastic or in metal. I did that for a popular vampire slaying show (I don't want the bots to find me. They've already ceased-and-desisted me once. . .) prop. I haven't finished it yet, so it's still just in bare metal, but I'll give you an idea.

For something like that that you may not want to weigh 30lbs - I'd go for plastic.

I don't know about where you're at, but here in California, there are a half dozen places that would do the plastic work for ~<$100USD if you did the moulds.

If you want that hand functional, you'll have to do each joint separately, and then pin them. There will be some bio-mechanical engineering there to get the overlap right.

      [edit]
yeah, I would cheat it and do what the movie houses do. Model in clay, then cast, then build it up in firm latex or foam rubber. Building a functional arm would be a crapload of work. Not counting sculpting it in clay (which will take n hrs - depending upon your skill and attention to detail), I could do it in firm latex or foam rubber as a long glove in probably 3hrs.

That's one awesome pumpkin job... well done!
Of course, maybe it's just because halloween isn't very big in this country, I've never really seen someone take it seriously enough..

Those of you who have seen me in the chatroom should be able to figure this one out:

Hey Nińa, look what I found in my attic!

I had a killer blouse that went with it ( I can't believe I just said that) - but it's MIA along with a sword and some other goodies I made.

Now.. you know you want my pin!

      Nice costumes!

And thanks for the advice, guys. I'll definately look into making that arm. I'm by far not a craftsmen, but I'm sure I can put something together with your suggestions. ^_^

We went as vampires to one of the Halloween parties (I'll see if I can find a full length one later)

It's funny, Robert says he hates Halloween because it falls on his birthday, this coming from a man who had 2 different costumes and went to 3 different costume parties and even dressed up as Death for one of his birthday parties. I still love him.

hmmm.... is that the space of a missing tonsil I see back in there? I can almost see what you had for dinner from here!

Born on Halloween? You sure you've checked his body thoroughly for any marks resembling "666"?
