Guys guys guys. Why make an "alternative to IRC until something else comes"? IRC is awesome. In fact, we should support IRC and get everybody there rather than .. well, making 100^100 alternatives.

I believe I've suggested this before, but the idea was shot down before... this was over a year ago (maybe 2). I suggested that Freenode be used, as it's a network that has been around for a good many years, and the chances of it going down (other then the occasional netsplit) are VERY low.

One of my first times being a regular on IRC, the project's channel was hosted on a russian network called XNET which had about 5 servers.. that net was good for a few months, then it just crumbled.... I'm not saying its bad if the channel needs to move, it just shouldn't be necessary.

Speaking from experiance.. if you're going to pick an IRC net to make a home on, you really have to consider a few things.

1. The net better have good uptime, I can't connect to darkmyst right now, not a good sign.

2. The net better have a good community, I mean on EFNet and Undernet, which are really big nets.. you have to be a little careful of the crowds on there. Nobody wants pornbots sitting in on the dreamviews channel (well maybe some do, but these aren't even good bots, they are spambots). In any case, Freenode's community is mainly centered around opensource software development, so its relatively calm. I believe that a lucid dreaming community's channel would be welcome.

3. The services should be good.. Most nets use a mix of chanserv and nickserv to keep things in line, though there are some weird ones that do not. Also different networks run different software which may have different modes. I've seen the evolution of dancer into hyperion on Freenode, it has very reliable services to safeguard channels from abuse.

4. The IRCops should be pretty chill. I've been on a great deal of networks, and I can say that on some nets people run rampant and start floods, etc... On the other end of the spectrum is the kind of net you step onto where if you disagree with an IRCop, you get a K-Line. While freenode hasn't been perfect, I know about half of the IRCops and they've always been helpful when an issue came up.

Its up to you guys, this is the third or fourth time that the question popped up whether to start an IRC channel or not and the attempts done in the past were just plain stupid with people running the servers off their own DSL lines. Thats not a realistic plan, and its getting damn annoying that people still insist on trying it here.

I have been, and always will be a supporter of starting a dreamviews IRC channel, I just would like to see it on a reputable network that people can actually use. Chatjunkies might also be a viable home for the channel if someone has a grudge against Freenode or something.

Whatever though, just make up your damn minds and get something done for a change. Thanks.
Just keep moving…

the IRC we have now works really good... there are tons of servers and its very small network.

I've had no problems so far, neither have anybody else...

its been going strong for, lyk, omg 19 days now. It's been pretty active, and we have two new DV members now that we met when our room had a ... uh.... "party" with another room.

The current IRC channel is unofficial.
The administration of Dream Views has no connection to it whatsoever. It is an independant place where Dream Views members gather to chat.

Until or unless the IRC channel becomes official, none of the above statements, especially "Whatever though, just make up your damn minds and get something done for a change. Thanks.", have any relevance.

And except for that, DarkMyst has worked perfectly. Maybe you can't connect but thats you cause I've never had any troubling connecting and I WHORE this IRC chan pretty much.

Ok, after finally going in the channel its pretty good. And another thing, I've known that in the past that the admins of DV have not shown an interest in creating an official channel and after all that's fine.

The main point of my former post was to be informative as to what to look for should they decide to create an official channel.

In any case, I plan to stay in this channel in hopes it becomes more accepted as a place to chill for DV members.

The only gripe I have on this network itself, is that I can't link multiple nicks together, because I'd like to change to my wider known identity on DV someday.

well I understand why they don't want an official DV irc channel

its too easy to make your nick like "icedawg" or something

what would be cool is if it was on irc.dreamviews.com or something

and ChanServ could run their IP against the forum database and announce a person's nickname when they join or something

that would be splendid

Cool

Guess who broke his computer?

Me.

Ja ME, I broke MY computer when uninstalling flyakiteOSX...

Im gonna have to wait 'till I visit someone with a CD burner... Burn me a nice liveCD... And replace whatever broken .dll file(s) dell says the error code is complaining about. I hope... I just HOPE fakosx (haha FAKE osx) backed up the things it messed with... One year ago...

So don't expect to see me in the IRC channel for a... long time.

I'm posting this on my crappy dapper sidekick brick phone... All you conspiracy theorists.

I was already wondering where you went.

Shit man, that sucks. Hmm, I guess I could burn a CD for ya and mail it to you if you don't have anybody that has that liveCD. Just send me a PM with your address etc and I'll do it anytime for ya <3
