One of my first times being a regular on IRC, the project's channel was hosted on a russian network called XNET which had about 5 servers.. that net was good for a few months, then it just crumbled.... I'm not saying its bad if the channel needs to move, it just shouldn't be necessary.
Speaking from experiance.. if you're going to pick an IRC net to make a home on, you really have to consider a few things.
1. The net better have good uptime, I can't connect to darkmyst right now, not a good sign.
2. The net better have a good community, I mean on EFNet and Undernet, which are really big nets.. you have to be a little careful of the crowds on there. Nobody wants pornbots sitting in on the dreamviews channel (well maybe some do, but these aren't even good bots, they are spambots). In any case, Freenode's community is mainly centered around opensource software development, so its relatively calm. I believe that a lucid dreaming community's channel would be welcome.
3. The services should be good.. Most nets use a mix of chanserv and nickserv to keep things in line, though there are some weird ones that do not. Also different networks run different software which may have different modes. I've seen the evolution of dancer into hyperion on Freenode, it has very reliable services to safeguard channels from abuse.
4. The IRCops should be pretty chill. I've been on a great deal of networks, and I can say that on some nets people run rampant and start floods, etc... On the other end of the spectrum is the kind of net you step onto where if you disagree with an IRCop, you get a K-Line. While freenode hasn't been perfect, I know about half of the IRCops and they've always been helpful when an issue came up.
Its up to you guys, this is the third or fourth time that the question popped up whether to start an IRC channel or not and the attempts done in the past were just plain stupid with people running the servers off their own DSL lines. Thats not a realistic plan, and its getting damn annoying that people still insist on trying it here.
I have been, and always will be a supporter of starting a dreamviews IRC channel, I just would like to see it on a reputable network that people can actually use. Chatjunkies might also be a viable home for the channel if someone has a grudge against Freenode or something.
Whatever though, just make up your damn minds and get something done for a change. Thanks.[/b]
