So yeah, how fast is your downstream connection to the internet? Mine connection is DSL... 1.5mb/s down, 384kb/s up. Also I made a typo in the poll... it should say "unsecure" instead of "unsercure" hehe... how do I edit the poll?

Edit: These are measured in BITS! (my bad for not specifying)

I always thought that apocalypse would be right around the corner and God would just bomb the whole planet when people had to start coveting not only people's posessions, bank accounts, families and countries.. but their bandwidth speeds too.

PS: 56k. And it works just fine.

12/1 Mbit. Rawr.

Edit: Dude, are we talking about Kbit or kb/s ? HUGE Difference. I think you're talking about kbit, seeing you have 56 as dialup, etc.. kb/s = kbit divided by 8. E.g., my 12 Mbit down line is actually 1.5 MB/s (meaning I can download with 1.5 MB/s max, if I dedicate the internet line to just that one download and the server is that fast).

I am talking of bits thus the lowercase b... well I put the whole thing in lowercase... but yeah it's bits

From wikipedia:
A kilobit is a unit of information, abbreviated kbit, sometimes also kb.

A kilobyte (derived from the SI prefix kilo-, meaning 1000) is a unit of information or computer storage equal to either 1024 or 1000 bytes. It is commonly abbreviated KB, kB, Kbyte, kbyte, or, very informally, K or k.

Yeah looks like I used a less common abbreviation... my bad

Further edit: Wikipedia:
A kilobit per second (kbit/s or kbps) is a unit of data transfer rate equal to 1,000 bits per second. I

OK I used an INVALID abbreviation... really my bad... bah

Greater than 5 MBits/s. I've seen my download speed go up to 5 MByes/s before, but that was pretty rare.

I have 100Mbit/sec down. I am unsure what to vote, > 5 or T3?
The insane connection speed is because my internet is tied into the university's network.

If its that fast... and tied into a university... well a T3 line is 44.736 Mbits/s so... 100Mbit/s is the standard defined by 100-base T
From wikipedia:
In computer networking, Fast Ethernet is a collective term for a number of Ethernet standards that carry traffic at the nominal rate of 100 Mbit/s

Your connection to the campus network could be 100Mbits/s but your internet speed would be substantially slower... I suppose you could be tied into a fiber line that runs with the internet backbone though, or your university might rent multiple T lines... eh IDK

How do you live with that? Whenever I use a computer with 56kb/s access I have to control myself to keep from taking a sledgehammer to the thing.

I get about 7.6 mb/s down, 360 kb/s up.

UPDATE: 8/24/06

Not anymore! I now get 16 mbps down over 365kbps up. Yeawaaaaaaw

No, I really get 100Mbits/s over the internet. I can get download speeds of over 9 Mbyte/sec. I do share that connection with some other people, though, 8 other to be exact. But they don't use much of the bandwidth, so largely it is ALL MINE. MWHAHAHA!

They give you that much speed for just 8 people. Wtf, that is so not fair (Well, nine people getting FIOS joining their internet connection would get that too, but that is still way unfair). How much does it cost though?

...Nothing. It is included in rent.
Well, actually, I pay 7 euros for the internet service a month. Which is about 10 dollars, I think. So, not only do I have the fastest internet, I also have the cheapest.

I'm a WiFi pirate. The wireless card cost $20-something, and I don't pay monthly fees, so it totally kicks.
Currently, I siphon off of my home's DSL, but my mom shuts it off most of the time so I borrow a little bandwidth from my neighbor's cable. I'd stick to the cable all the time if I got a better connection to it, but I only get a 50% signal strength most of the time, so it's usually more reliable to go with the slower stuff. When I move up to Logan for college I'll get free WiFi, I'm assuming a T1 line, but it'll be shared with others, so it probably won't be amazing.
Currently, 728/256 I think. A few days ago I was getting some killer speeds, though, at the peak I was getting about 1Mbit upload speeds, I don't know what the download speeds were, but they were up there, too.

So I notice your choices stop at the relativly slow "T3"...pfft.

Ok so some people like big Telcos and broadband ISPs like Sprint, MCI UUnet, and Qwest have the OC-255. This is all good and fine for them but I realized it wasn't really that great. So I had to upgrade to the slightly quicker OC-768 connection. Which does about 40 Gigabits a second...not too bad. SO why would anyone need that much speed?...porn mostly. I've also downloaded God. 8)

anyway I, too got nabbed by the ISP with the kilobyte/bit madness

3megabits? I thought it was megaBYTES

but no its megaBITS

they shopped 7/8ths off of my connection speed

fastest I've downloaded was like around 350 kilobytes a second

upload is like 150...

/me is happy

Yay, I thought i'd come back and bring this topic back to life so I could brag that I checked my connection speed again this morning, and it's 2.5 times faster than before (for download only though), at about 16 megabit per second download.

Yeah that's fucked up. I thought I'd get 12MB/s download but instead I only get 1.5 MB/s download!! I AM SO SCAMMED, I THOUGHT MY INTERNET WOULD BE FAST.

100 Mbps up and down, full duplex. Non-shared with other people. (Well, technically all connections are shared in some way later on, but I have 100 to the inner network wich is then faster than that.)

Haven't seen you in a while, Stalker.

Anyway, I'm up at college now and I'm getting a little over 2000kbit up/800kbit down. Pretty good, but I don't have anything to use it for...
