I thought I'd just start this thread to see what other guys on DV are like. I just cooked this really neapolitan dish. The recipe calls it "Parmigianina di Melanzane" whatever the hell that means. Basically it was a layered sort of roasted vegeterian lasagnia (sp?) with layers of herby tomato paste and eggplant and peppers and parmesan. Long story short, it was Really Freaking Lovely. This pungent stewy vegetable lasagna type stuff.

But, it got me thinking. Ever since I left home, went flatting, then returned back home, I've actually figured out that, number one, I can actually cook, and reasonably well, which came as a bit of a suprise, and secondly, that I ENJOY cooking. And I was wondering, how unusual is this, me being a guy? I mean, I've grown up with a mother who is a FANTASTIC cook, able to make delicious meals out of nothing, with very mediterranean tastes, and I'm the same.

What do the rest of you guys, and girls, thing about cooking? Are you good? Do you cook often? Do you love your food?

Also, do you think the art of cooking is being lost a bit in the growing microwave and junk food culture?

Also, do you have any staple foods you find yourself using heaps in your cooking? For me, it's eggplant, garlic, tomato, onion, and bell peppers.

Do you guys cook? What do you think of males cooking?

Interesting that you should ask this. I recently quit my 20+ year IT career to attend culinary school. I don't have a lot of experience yet, but I certainly do cook, and enjoy it very much. And as a side note, the majority of the best chefs in the world are men -- not because they're better at it than women, it's just been one of those (many) professions that until recently was dominated by males.

I suppose your question really had more to do with domestic cooking that professional cooking, but in my house, what little cooking goes on is usually done by me.

When I have to I will cook food, but I would rather let someone else do it for me.

I cook almost all my meals lately. I live with my dad and he is often back from work late, or he's in some other country. I try, but it is hard, to keep some variation is what I eat. I also kind of hate tv-dinners and such, yet sometimes I fell before it's grace of easy-ness.. : )

I am a pretty average cook, I don't burn much, like I did, but it aint special at all.

Of course guys cook. It's kind of necessary. I'm 15, and I know how to cook. I figure it'll be important. After college, buying a lunch every day probably isn't an option, unless you want to become a Fatty McLardbasket.
I'm not a great cook, but occasionally I'll make something pretty good. Shrimp Scampi is pretty easy, and the result is freaking DELICIOUS. I don't particularly enjoy cooking, but it isn't too bad.

I think a womans place is in the kitchen!

I like cooking --(when I have time)
I do the majority of the cooking for me and Brooke.

She is a Vegetarian, so at times you have to get creative.
Often I will just make two dishes, as does she. Depending on how carnivorous I am feeling that day.

Seems like a lot of men cook.

Both my parents work full time and +, so I've learned to cook pretty well. I don't have much variety, but I can make a mean steak, and I have an odd taste for half burned red peppers after being sauteed in garlic and oil. Chicken, pasta (not rocket science) and salmon are other foods I've experimented with.
Anyway, I hope to get better. I figure in college it could help me out. Mainly with girls , but if that doesn't work out, I can just charge random people for a "home cooked meal." Seems like a good way to make some cash on the side. I actually had an extensive day dream once about this, it took up most of my school day.

I think it is wonderful that a man knows how and loves to cook! My husband does not cook but I do enjoy it so it's not a chore. Every once in awhile we will cook something together which I think is great fun for a couple to do.

Also, do you think the art of cooking is being lost a bit in the growing microwave and junk food culture?[/b]
I know that even though I cook many home-cooked meals from "scratch", I do not cook like my mother did. I do short-cuts. She was a wonderful baker----homemade yeast rolls, Perogi's (Polish dish), Galumpki(cabbage rolls--another Polish dish), homemade noodles for soup, pastry for "Lady Fingers", pie crust, Nut bread, etc..... She was a stay at home mom and most of her day was spent cooking. We ALWAYS had a big, hot,Sunday-type meal everyday day of the week.

Also, do you have any staple foods you find yourself using heaps in your cooking? For me, it's eggplant, garlic, tomato, onion, and bell peppers.[/b]
Rice. I use lots of rice. Potatoes, tomatoes, onion, green pepers.

I just cooked this really neapolitan dish. The recipe calls it "Parmigianina di Melanzane" whatever the hell that means. That sounds heavenly, Blue Meanie. A twist on Eggplant Parmesan. I LOVE Egglant Parmesan!!

I'm a pretty decent cook. Not great or anything, but people like my food. I cook most meals on the weekend to give my wife a break.

I'll be putting on the baked potato's in a few minutes for tonights meal.

Tonight, nothing fancy. Baked potato, BBQ grilled tenderloin, and ceaser salad.

I LOVE to cook and bake, but it's awfully difficult to do so working a full time job, running a business and keeping active in music. In the end, I'm fortunate to get the kitchen a few times a year. Planning a meal, finding and choosing the ingredients, preparing and cooking/baking is one of the easiest arts there is to enjoy and share with others.

If my life were different, I'd do most of the cooking and be very thrilled about it... I think. It is also entirely possible that cooking being such a rare treat for me is what makes it so special and enjoyable.

I've actually tried to cut rice out of my diet - I cook couscous instead, I like it way more, and it never fails to come out perfect. But, that's just me...

Couscous is good. I like it, too, but still use rice also.

My main aim with food is taking in enough calories and protein which means all my worries about how food tastes go out the window. I drink at least 2 raw eggs every day. I have 6 meals everyday usually consisting of some form of meat and bread. I need at the very least 2000 calories every day and at least 160g of protein. Half the stuff I eat/ drink I have to cover my nose to stomach (raw eggs and protien powder for example). So yes, I cook but not because I want to enjoy the meal more than some crappy 2 minute microwave meal or because I am even good at it. I just do it to keep up with exactly what I am eating.

I never cooked at all until I was living on my own. My mother was a horrid cook so I had no cheffing skills whatsoever.

I started watching cooking shows in my spare time and learned about spices. SPICES! I think the only ones mother ever used or knew about were salt, pepper and the occasional sprinkling of paprika on devilled eggs.

Despite my flavor deprived childhood I ended up becoming a decent cook. No one's died from my cooking so far... no one I know of anyway. And I like cooking. What sucks is I can't enjoy my works of culinary art because I have stomach problems.

As much as I do like cooking I prefer my guy to do it. Watching a guy cook is a treat in itself.

I LOVE cooking. I think there's no excuse for not at least knowing a few simple recipies.

Interestingly, my housemate is a girl and yet I do much more cooking, dishes and general cleaning than her. When I was growing up it was the same at home - dad was the one that made all the good meals.

I think that good cooking is what seperates a passionate, creative life from a baseline consumer life. Food is one of the absolute basics of life - we could simply eat a chunk of meat every day or we could take the time to prepare it and be creative and actually enjoy it for something more than a heap of protein.

I love my food and I love to cook good food. That said, I'm not immune to slapping together some pasta shells with a bit of tomato sauce if I can't be arsed.

Generally I cook about 4 nights of the week, depending on who out of my wife and I is the hungriest.

Oh NO!!! Seriously, what's the deal, if you don't mind me asking personal questions? What stuff can't you eat, and what happens if you do? (Myself, I don't eat any seafood - makes me sick, psychologically - not a physical allergy or anything, it just revulses me)

Actually, James is cooking me dinner right now as I'm typing this! He's a good hubby.
But I'm still stuck doing all the dishes. ugh

I cook, but not every night. I'd say James and I cook an equal amount, depending on each other's work schedules. I'm not very good - I need exact cookbook directions for most things - but I think I could be better if I enjoyed it more. It just takes too long when I'm hungry NOW.
