All of you?

BE. CAREFUL. AROUND. GUNS.

I wasn't careful enough. One just went off before I was ready. It shot out one of my windows, and I have a smoke mark on my hand... Jesus, that was too close.

They aren't.

Okay, I have actually done that before. Well, not really. I was curious, and shot a gun. While home alone. This time... Yeah. I wasn't careful enough.
That was, without a doubt, the stupidest thing I have ever done.

A Walther PPK.

The remains are cleared away, a piece of plywood put in it's place for the time being. A new pane is on the way, and I'm off scot-free.

I'm wondering how I talked myself out of that...

Switch to bows and arrows. It's really hard to kill yourself with one and they look cool.

Gun laws in America are frankly mad. The average British citizen has never touched a gun, nor had any interest in one, nor any need. What makes Americans so different that they warrant the need for guns?

It's just bonkers.

I like guns. Identity X is mad. Guns are a whole lot less dangerous than, say, British cuisine. Besides, it's my gun, and not your place to say if I can have one or not, ha-ha! THE END

Yes, that strikes me as strange too. I do kinda understand something like Kaniaz just said, though. After all, if it were normal for me to own a gun and I did, I would probably feel less positive about banning them, and obviously, that's the American perspective. Us Europeans (and the British can't hide on their island. They're part of our big happy family too) need to s to be able to understand such a matter, I guess. Just like wilan American probably would need some help understanding that, on the other side of the ocean, most people have never even had the thought of owning a gun cross their mind.

Either way, it still seems like an insane contradiction to me that a nation would ban drugs and make drinking illegal below the age of 21, while allowing guns. Then again, a subject like this is not something I'll criticize a foreign nation on, as I don't live there anyway, although I don't think I'd really want to go on vacation there until after my 21st birthday...

And Freshbrains. Tragic as your fate might have been, had you actually shot yourself, you definitly would have lived up to your name. As the Roman proverb says: "nomen est omen".
Playing with guns is bad, mmmkay?

You never really free if someone can take everything away from you with the point of a gun. Thats why you get your own gun. When people say you should get rid of guns what their really saying is you shouldn't be able to defend yourself.

Actually, if you have a CCW (Carry Concealed Weapon permit) you can carry a concealed weapon on your body.

For once, Alric - I agree with you.

We have guns because we can. You never know what may happen, especially in uncertain times like these, and having the knowledge of how to fire a weapon is never a bad thing to know.

Back in 2003, when the whole eastern seaboard of the U.S. lost power, you wouldn't believe the chaos that took place. There were violent crimes everywhere - people looting, etc - it was basically a free-for-all. And I want to have the means to protect my house and family if I need to. We have 2 assault rifles and 2 high-powered air rifles, and I know how to use all of them - well.

Hell, if a power cut is all it takes for the US to erupt in to an frenzy of violence, maybe you do need guns after all.

Or maybe you lot should have your ruddy heads sorted out!

From a UN servey on crime:

Intentional Homicide per 100,000 capita: England & Wales: 1.43 US: 5.19
...with a firearm: E&W: 0.09 US: 3.37!!!

GUNS. ARE. BAD.

PS: Burglaries and car thefts are much higher in E&W than the US, so we don't have it all good...

I love guns. In fact I'd move to America if it meant that I could legally own guns. We don't get any cool guns over here, shotguns and rifles. Even shotguns are illegal if they're pump action and that's the only type that's really worth having for fun.

Come on over!

Guns make people equal. An armed society is a polite society.

This is kind of interesting. I love how the Americans have it ingrained in them that guns are good for them.

Unlike what Kaniaz said earlier, these are statements that I simply fail to understand. To say things like this in the Netherlands, you'd have to be at least some kind of neo-nazi skinhead, but then again, that's the cultural difference I was talking about in my other post.

Interesting how cultures differing relatively little, like Western Europe and North America can still show wide gaps like this. On this side, the absence of guns provides a feeling of safety (at least to me), while across the ocean, the exact opposite is true.

I'm not saying that everyone should own guns - all to his own. Some people just aren't comfortable with them. But, imo, it's never a bad thing to know how to handle one. Like I said before, you never know what may happen in the future - that may sound melodramatic but you seriously never know...

All I'm saying is, however hard you American's can try to kid yourself into thinking guns are a justifiable necessity, there are many countries, for instance most of Europe, that function perfectly well with incredible strict gun laws and very low ownership, with far lower crime rates. America has dug itself a hole with regards to its blasé attitude to guns, dare I say inducing a typical violent temperament among the public, and it may be impossible to get out of it.

I will tell you where it came from. Our country became a country by fighting a revolution. That revolution would have been nearly impossible without guns. So why is it called a revolution? Because we overthrew the legitimate ruling government. So people can say you will never have to overthrow your government but since it has happened and its how our country was made, that arguement is total bull. Now you look at other countrys with brutal dictators and you think "Why don't people just over throw them?". Some times they do but mostly they have a hard doing it. If suddenly that population had no guns, well its all over. They would have no chance of winning without guns.

Now what would happen tomorrow if there was a terrorist attacked and Bush came on TV and went "The country is to unstable right now so I am going to remain president untill the terrorist problem is solved". He basicly just decleared he was going to be president indefinitely and is now a dictator. What do you do? You send him a mean letter telling him to stop? Well thats about all you can do if guns are illegal.

Someone said nazi, so lets use that. What was one of the really bad things they did? The holocaust. I want you to ask yourself this, would the holocaust have happened if nearly every single one of the people killed, had of owned a gun? Its very unlikely, there would have be blood in the street and probably large scale rioting.

People some times think your crazy when you say you need guns to protect yourself from you own government but there are very real cases of governments harming its own population. So don't tell me "it will never happen". Hopefully it won't, but if it does you don't stand a chance without guns.
