Well... Moral and ethics say we shoudnt do these things. Fighting is bad. Violenece is bad. Yes, you did a very bad thing and should rot in prison for this.. But wait. Thats what morals say. I say, were only humans.. We can take only so much before breaking. And you tried to handle him with words. But it didnt work.

In my opinion... You did the right thing. Sickos like such only remember with some beating... I would have done the same thing. I would beat the crap out of the guy.

As long as you dont make breaking bones and elbows a habit its ok. Its good to beat up such people. Morals are like rules, sometimes... You just have to brake them.
