I can remember always wondering what kind of butterfly or moth a wollyworm turned into.
Well, a couple of years ago, we found one in a flower we had brought in for the winter. He was not dead, just a little lethargic.
If was too cold to put him out, and my wife and I being the aminal lovers that we are decided we would try to keep him alive.
We put him in a small box and would go out looking for greenery he would eat. It got really difficult later in the winter.
Sometime around December, he finally decided to cocoon up. It was a small hairy cocoon, I guess he used his own hair.
We kept a close eye on him because we didn't want to miss when ehe emerged.
Finally, sometime late Feburary he split open.
He was a medium sized white moth with a black criss-cross pattern on his wings.
Luckily for him, it was warm the week he emerged, and since moths only live for a few weeks anyway, we released him outside.
Oh my god, that was the sweetest thing I've ever heard! My heart just got all warm and fuzzy. I'm the same way. I'll go to great lengths to rescue any sort of animal. I remember one year when I was living with my ex, we found a ladybug that had gotten lost in our apartment. He took a piece of paper, scooped her up, and set her on a nearby tree outside. We said our goodbyes and life resumed.
A little later in the year, we noticed a rather large shadow in the corner of our room. When we got a closer look, we saw that it was a group of ladybugs! There must have been at least 40 or 50 of them! Dave almost passed out laughing! Apparently the ladybug we had helped a few months before had told all her friends that we were cool people. We took our time and carefully brushed them all into a tupperware container, and we went outside and set them all free. We felt a little bad though, because it was the end of September when the weather around here is just starting to get a bit chilly. They seemed ok, though, and we parted company.
Two days later, the massive shadow was back. All the ladybugs had come back again! This time, it was colder than usual outside, so we relocated them to the computer room and let them live with us. It's funny... they never left that room, either. And then, one day, they were just gone. It was about five years ago, but I still think about them.
