Wow. I just heard about this today. I don't ever read the newspaper. I don't have a TV. I never read news sites on the internet. But I went to McDonald's today and Fox News was on with a little bit about this case. It didn't even really explain what happened.

This stuff is so stupid. I can't believe there are still racial issues today. It's like, "Okay people, you've been stupid long enough, get the fuck over it already!" Yes, Jeff, this should piss anyone off.

      I've been reading about this.

After viewing the ENTIRE clip on youtube, and if the facts have been accurately reported, then there is no "equal justice under the law" in Jena, LA.

You're right Idec, I thought we had progressed farther than this...this is just ridiculous how the d.a. judge, and jury are treating these boys. I live in Mississippi and I can honestly say that Jena is making Mississippi look like heaven on earth.

The facts are correct...the Jena government and school board are corrupt. Today is the day that Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Mos Def, Martin Luther King III, and 60 thousand other people plan to rally peacefully outside of the boys hearing today in Jena...the schools have been shut down because of the large number of people expected. David Bowie the rockstar even thinks Jena is fucked up, he donated $10,000 help pay for the boys lawyers and commented saying "Jena is clearly mistreating these boys and something needs to be done."

I'm at work so I could only watch a bit of the march on CNN.com but I heard Jesse's speech (great btw). The number of people there is impressive to say the least.

I sincerely hope those in "power" take notice.

Wow, that is well bad. I hope that he doesn't get 22 years. I don't think the petitions will work though, even if they get well over a million. I seriously hope though that the 6 are released.

Yeah, I watched 2 hours of live feed courtesy of msnbc...this is messed up...thankfully senator hilary clinton expressed her distaste in the handling of this case as well and in a press conference said she would reach out to the bush administration -which she did- Bush said what they're doing to the boys is saddening him and he's gotten the department of justice and the federal bureau of investigation monitoring the situation. However you want to turn or flip the situation...hanging nooses from a tree isn't a "schoolyard prank" as the Dumbass district attorney Reed Walters calls it...it's a H-A-T-E C-R-I-M-E. I suppose I was naive for thinking America, as a people, had grown and were past all this...we're all human, we bleed the same crimson blood, we have mothers, we feel pain, we hurt, we love, we cry, we have hopes dreams goals...aspirations, and futures...so why hold one man's race above another? When will this end...

Unforunately, rascism does exist, and I doubt it will stop anytime soon. There are so many close-minded people out there, but we can protest against it. You would be suprised when you hear what still happens at schools today. (and all other places) Anyway I believe there is a petition, not sure of the link though.

I can't stand injustice. Needless to say both petitions have been signed by me.

I don't understand how people can do this. The ignorance involved in thinking that a person is superior because they look different is mind-boggling. You'd think that the jury would be equally represented by both black and white members of society instead of such a unbalanced and biased and unjust section of society. As it is, not necessarily innocent people (don't forget that they did commit a crime) have been sent to prison for an inordinate amount of time. 22 years for a provoked attack?!

Hopefully more people will see this documentary and do something about it rather than just think "Oh someone else can do it."

This is really wrong, i think that such things should not be allowed in any part of the world, racism is just horrible, especially when it gets into the justice system, that is just horrible, i hope that true justice is served with no racial discrimination involved.

Yeah, I've been following this since I heard about it on the radio about a month ago (by the way, it does bother me that none of this was national news for an entire year after it happened).

Now, I grant no pardon for these kids for 6 of them jumping on another student (white, brown, purple or otherwise), though they should be tried fairly and at the risk of a punishment that fits the crime.

What bothers me the most, though, is the sort of passivity granted for a "joke" that involves a noose. The hanging of a noose (especially when directed toward black person in the deep south) is nothing short of a death-threat. As I understand it, that would carry a charge of nothing less than assault. How could this possibly be passed of and/or excused as a "joke?" There is context to a noose being hung from a tree that cannot and should not be ignored. If a kid brought a gun to school and waved it in the face of another student, could it, later, be dismissed as a "joke" and carry no sentence? Doubtful.

Why free them? The guy they beat unconscious was innocent of doing anything criminal. He was reportedly an asshole, but being beaten senseless was way out of line. I don't understand that outcry at all, and too many people are crying it out. The perpetrators deserve fair trials, and obviously the justice system in Jena is insane and needs to be corrected, but I am nowhere near thinking those horrible sons of bitches should be freed. Why do you want them free to walk the streets with such sociopathic tendencies and histories?

That is where I stand. I don't pardon them at all, but everybody deserves fairness under the law. And the noose gang made a death threat as far as I am concerned, and they should be in jail too. Every criminal perpetrator in the entire story should be in jail.

22 years is probably too much, and the charge should have been aggravated assault instead of attempted murder, but the attack was not called for. It might have been provoked, but not criminally. Imagine it being your innocent son they did that to. Every perpetrator in that story sucks and should be dealt with under the law in the right way.

From what I gathered from the story the guy they attacked was not innocent but one of the students who was involved in the thing (which I have completely forgotten about). Anyway, I always felt that the guy they attacked was distinctly not innocent, deserved what he got and wasn't injured too badly. He went to a party that very same day on which he was attacked later in the evening!

Oh, he was one of the noose scum? I didn't know that. The attackers still committed illegal violence, but if that victim was one of the death threat makers, then the attackers have a lot of mitigation for a court to consider, especially considering that the law would not do a damn thing to help them. I live very close to Jena, and it is freaky that small town governments in my area are still that messed up.

Right, well I agree with you that the boys should be tried fairly and deserve a just form of punishment...not to walk away scott free, but I think what you fail to realize is that Michael Bell (black guy whose in jail) was beaten down by Justin Barker's (guy michael and his friends beat down) friends earlier, previous to the shotgun incident. He (michael) was invited to a party by a white friend of his and a woman at the door wouldn't let michael in, telling him the party wasn't for people like him. A white guy jumped in the middle of their conversation (Justin's friend) and beat the crap out of Michael. Some others beat Michael down as well if i'm not mistaken. But one thing I know is that no charges were brought against the people who fought the jena 6 first, but when the jena 6 struck back against a member of the group that assaulted michael earlier on, all of them were thrown in prison and had unjust charges thrown at them. There's no god damn sense in that.

I agree with Martin Luther King III, the jena 6 boys should be tried justly and some form of punishment should be given to them...but giving a 16 year old boy 22 years in prison is NOT just...especially when you've convinced the jury that michael's tennis shoes he kicked justin with were "Deadly murder weapons."

Justin Barker (the guy who was beaten) had minor cuts and a swollen eye, evidently he was well enough to attend a social function that night as you pointed out. And you're right...he wasn't innocent. He racially taunted them on numerous accounts regularly calling them words and names only a slave master in the 1800's would use. Personally speaking...I would have decked the guy myself.

I'm not entirely sure...I doubt it, from what i've gathered...Justin was good friends with the people who jumped Michael at the party, though I could be wrong.

The Jena six shouldn't get off without being charged anything, instead the Jena six and the gunman should all be charged. I absolutely hate how the gunman is simply forgotten and people want the Jena six to get off without any sort of punishment.

It's not just about the jena 6, it's about the corrupt fucking government in jena louisiana. If everyone were doing there damn jobs, then it would be more than 6 in prison.
