I just came back from my "talkativity tour" and got punched in the face... repeatedly. You should add a section on first aid to that post.

well I did say that everyone seems content in their comfort zones, which would imply that opening up and talking more might result in some discomfort, or even violence, as in your case.

but to be sure, I'll repeat it with more clarity:

this doesn't mean we should keep our mouths shut! let's not be cowards!

every person who reads this, I want you to make a thread in either Religion/Spirituality, Philosophy, or Extended Discussion and share your thoughts on something deep, something important to you. any one of your strongest, most controversial stances. you will likely be met with some careless, hateful replies. HOWEVER! you will also be met with replies from calm, intelligent, respectful, insightful people. and you may learn from them, and they may learn from you. how can you learn anything if you lock up a belief in your mind, never sharing it and only occasionally adding to it whatever bits of related information that happen to float your way? YOU WON'T GET ANYWHERE WITH THAT, YOU MIGHT AS WELL HAVE NO OPINIONS AT ALL, if you're just going to lazily hold them and never work on them.

UPDATE! if you have a belief, surely you don't know all there is to know about it, surely someone has had the same thoughts and discussed them with others and come to NEW, MORE REASONABLE CONSLUSIONS. IT'S TIME TO UPDATE YOUR BELIEFS!

This sums up my views on a lot of things. If there is something that I do have an opinion on but don't talk about, it is never because I'm worried about how people will take it. I like saying controversial things. Most of the time it is because I've already tried discussing it in the past and have lost the desire to. It would no longer be enjoyable to do so. For the remaining few, I do discuss them. I'm a selfish bastard and I do what I enjoy. If I don't think I'll enjoy getting into a discussion, I'm going to just look to the next one.

As far as starting a thread in one of those 3 sections, I don't really have an issue on hand that would fit in there. I'm not afraid to say what's on my mind. I just don't have anything on my mind at the moment (except my pizza in the microwave and the paused episode of Inuyasha in a minimized window).

I'll be sure to post something if anything ever comes up.

I do agree, though. People get offended way too easily. Sometimes I want to say something, whether true or not, just to offend them because I'm annoyed that they take offense to things too easily. I rarely do, though, because I try not to be mean without reason. I like Eminem's lyrics: "You find me offensive. I find you offensive for finding me offensive."

As far as beliefs, I know what I believe to be true and I've gotten into enough religious discussions to where it seems pointless to discuss with people who aren't here to experience it. All the discussions always end up with "well, we're not going to convince eachother, so I guess it's kinda pointless to keep going on". I've finally taken that advice.

I'm not saying everyone should stop enjoying their lives and drop all leisure. not at all. no, actually I highly encourage people to indulge themselves (in moderation of course). after all they can't be happy and function well if they are unhappy, right?

the reason you can't convince anyone is obviously because YOUR ARGUMENT NEEDS TO BE WORKED ON! if you give up and stop learning then OF COURSE you won't be able to persuade anyone of anything, your argument is weak! if you spent time on it you could improve it enough to influence people! DON'T GIVE UP AND EMBRACE YOUR IGNORANCE WHEN YOU COME TO AN IMPASSE! GO HOME AND STUDY, WORK ON YOUR ARGUMENT AND COME BACK WITH FURY!

I am pretty useless. I agree. It doesn't really bother me, though. I don't have an urge to be very useful. The more useful you are, the more you are asked to do things. I've fine-tuned the information I let escape from my lips and I only let people know I'm useful in things that I would enjoy doing if they asked me. It has a nice bonus because it creates the illusion that I'm really selfless because I rarely refuse to do things people ask me to do and I'm usually happy to do things they do ask me to do without payment.

I suppose you are right. However, more so than giving up, most of the time I would call it quits was because the effort put forth had surpassed my desire to convince.

I don't know what to say. you lack passion, and I don't know how to inspire passion in people that don't have any. ok, that sucks, because that's what I'm trying to do. I've just always been a very passionate person.

I don't know what to do, besides stay passionate (which will stay anyway no matter what I do) and communicate as much as possible. I'm sure that doing that will influence some people, that aren't too stubbornly lazy. I know it will.

I'm not trying to put down what you are trying to do if it seems like that. I do admire your passion. I hope you get through to as many people as you can. I was just relating my situation to this topic. I don't mean to discourage you.

wow, thanks for that link, I hadn't read that. most of that does sound like me, except for a few things, like the love of science-fiction (I don't care for it at all) and computers, I like the internet but that's about it.

You know what? You're a bastard (and I'm smiling as I'm typing this). I went and walked to the store and suddenly I found myself thinking of a topic to start in the extended discussion thread as I walked. I became intrigued with the idea I had thought of and couldn't think of anything else until I got home and started it. I hope you are satisfied with what you made me do.
