Haven't used it, but I've been thinking about languages I could learn post-college, and this looks promising! |

I just got Rosetta Stone with the Spanish software, and it's awesome. Anybody else happen to be using this thing?? |

Do they have Gaelic? I really want to learn Scottish Gaelic when I can. |

I've heard of it, isn't it super-expensive though? |

O, I have been thinking about getting the Spanish version for months but I keep talking myself out of it. |

Indeed. |

Exactly^. That's a very big part of what I like about it. Most lessons try to teach you the "one language to another language" relation. Rosetta teaches you the "concept to language" relation. It's all about recognizing the image for what it is, and learning to say it in Spanish, not seeing an image, getting the word in English, and directly relating the English word to Spanish. |

I gotta say that I haven't heard that, either. |

Wow, sounds great. I've been needing something productive to do over the summer. I should get the French one. |

I hear people complain about it because they don't understand the picture or can't grasp the grammar. It does seem nice but can pictures do all of that? |

Exactly, thats why its so hard to learn a language in school, they have you memorize lists and phrases and don't give you enough of the actual practice needed for it all to become second nature. I'm sure Rosetta Stone is fine for learning some basic stuff but to become fluent in a language, which is usually the goal, you need to get actual practice by reading and listening to actual material in the target language, or idealy by actually interacting with someone who speaks it. A computer program can only get you so far. |
|
I've heard those Rosetta Stone programs are really good. I've never used it though. I would do the Spanish one, too, if I chose to get it. I took 4 years of Spanish between high school and college and I remember about 5% of it. |
|
So O, are you fluent in Spanish now? |
|
I've had my eye on the Japanese one for awhile. I downloaded a demo version that covered the first two lessons, and it was pretty cool. |

I tried the RS software for Japanese a long time ago. It wasn't too helpful. I ended up using audio tapes from other companies. |

O, que bueno que empiezas a estudiar español, aunque sea con un programa de computadora |

Saying quantum physics explains cognitive processes is just like saying geology explains jurisprudence.
The best thing I ever did to help learn a language was to study Latin as a GCSE. That taught me the structure of languages and how they are formed far better than any modern language or English lessons did. It's basic stuff, like knowing the difference between the Imperfect and Perfect tense which helps. |
