      The Rosetta Stone Linguistics Teacher

I just got Rosetta Stone with the Spanish software, and it's awesome. Anybody else happen to be using this thing??

If not, and you're looking into learning another language, I'd definitely recommended. I'm only through a small portion of the first lesson, and I can already see the potential.

Haven't used it, but I've been thinking about languages I could learn post-college, and this looks promising!

Nah. I don't think so, man. Not yet, anyway. But there are different language packages that are still coming out, so maybe they'll add it.

O, I have been thinking about getting the Spanish version for months but I keep talking myself out of it.

What do you like about it so far?

      Indeed.

The thing I like the most about it is that there is no english in the actual lessons. The one thing I had the most trouble with while taking spanish in highschool was that when I would attempt to remember the spanish for something, I would have to see it, think of what it was in english and then translate to spanish in my mind. The Rosetta lessons help me to directly associate objects and actions with the spanish word for them.

Exactly^. That's a very big part of what I like about it. Most lessons try to teach you the "one language to another language" relation. Rosetta teaches you the "concept to language" relation. It's all about recognizing the image for what it is, and learning to say it in Spanish, not seeing an image, getting the word in English, and directly relating the English word to Spanish.

Also, the way that it progresses through the lessons is very unique. It uses a lot of "process of elimination" and forces you to use logic in associating Spanish words (even new ones that you haven't covered yet, as you progress) with what is going on in the pictures. It makes you think, not just memorize.

You also get a number of different modes that you can take each lesson in.

You get text and audio, where they have the new term/sentence written and said aloud, and you have to find the picture.

You get just audio, where they just say it, and you have to find it.

      Just text: Self-explanatory.

And they also have one that I haven't experimented with yet, where you speak into the microphone and it matches your voice for the correct pronunciations. Really thorough program.

Yes i've heard of Roseta Stone. if it wasn't for the prise i would look into getting it myself.

But remember Roseta Stone is not meant to be your only tool to learn a language, it is merely a supplement to language learning.

      Good luck!

"Edit" You might also look into getting Pimseleur Spanish and Assimil Spanish (google it).

I've never heard of a 200 dollar 'supplement.' The Rosetta Stone series is advertised as a comprehensive language learning tool, and is priced accordingly. I don't think it is intended as a supplement.

tool/supplement. whatever. What i meant was that roseta stone should not be the only "tool" to your language learning. Using just Roseta stone will not get you far and thats why it should be used as a supplement to your learning not the main focus of your learning.

I gotta say that I haven't heard that, either.

Perhaps you're meaning to say that one shouldn't use it as their only tool, which is all fine and good (albeit a matter of opinion), but I'm sure it's main purpose is a stand-alone system.

I hear people complain about it because they don't understand the picture or can't grasp the grammar. It does seem nice but can pictures do all of that?

Exactly, thats why its so hard to learn a language in school, they have you memorize lists and phrases and don't give you enough of the actual practice needed for it all to become second nature. I'm sure Rosetta Stone is fine for learning some basic stuff but to become fluent in a language, which is usually the goal, you need to get actual practice by reading and listening to actual material in the target language, or idealy by actually interacting with someone who speaks it. A computer program can only get you so far.

I've heard those Rosetta Stone programs are really good. I've never used it though. I would do the Spanish one, too, if I chose to get it. I took 4 years of Spanish between high school and college and I remember about 5% of it.

I've had my eye on the Japanese one for awhile. I downloaded a demo version that covered the first two lessons, and it was pretty cool.

I do agree that it was hard to understand some of the pictures, though. Those little boys and little girls look the same to me!

Si, si. Mi espanol es perfecto ahora.

Haha. Nah, not yet. Been pretty busy so I've only been using the program sporadically. Having started from the beginning, I'm still going over a lot of the most basic stuff - most of which I'm already familiar with.

      I'm getting there, though!

I tried the RS software for Japanese a long time ago. It wasn't too helpful. I ended up using audio tapes from other companies.

O, que bueno que empiezas a estudiar español, aunque sea con un programa de computadora

Dime que el programa es bueno, y así lo creo. Pero no compraría un programa "milagroso", sea cual la razón. Y en todo caso no tengo el dinero

Podría mostrarnos como funciona el programa?

Y disculpame si lo hablo al español muy básico para tu persona ^^

PS: My spanish sucks and I know it. I tried, nevertheless ^^

The best thing I ever did to help learn a language was to study Latin as a GCSE. That taught me the structure of languages and how they are formed far better than any modern language or English lessons did. It's basic stuff, like knowing the difference between the Imperfect and Perfect tense which helps.
