Planning to do Chemistry at university? Any thoughts as to which university you want to go to?

I've looked around quite a few, and Edinburgh looked awesome. Not for English Lit., I wasn't looking at the academics.

I just thought the city looked pretty. And I've vaguely spent long enough there in the past to know it well enough.

Parents want me to redo one of the General Studies modules. I got an A in every module for General Studies with the exception of the 'Politics and Social whatever' module, in which I got a D.

I got a B overall, and it shouldn't be too difficult to vamp it up to an A with the A2 exams.

I disregarded them.

A Levels are easy and no one cares about general studies.

It's worth retaking modules you got an A in anyway, depending on how high an A it is. I did for the modules where I did't get full marks or close, just in case I messed up one of my modules for whatever reason.

Maths (AS+A2): A, 93%
Physics: A, 99%
Chemistry: A, 93%
Biology: A, 88%

Shoop da woop.

Was proud of my 99% in physics. Somehow dropped 4 marks on waves and particles; got full marks on classic newtonian stuff and electronics though. Well appy. Makes up for my relatively poor 87% in my mechanics module which I got by managing to not see a 10 mark question; applying for maths at Cambridge so some proof of skill with physics was needed.

Shame how A Levels are being devalued though, by the pathetic British government trying to conceal the huge drop in education standards by making exams easier. You used to have to know differentiation and integration for GCSE! Now the hardest it gets is factorisation. Ridiculous.

Philosophy-A (full marks). Smug.

Art- A

General studies- A

RS-B [nearly full marks on philosophy of religion, but complete failure on the john's gospel business]

English lit.- B

I'll be retaking the john module and aim for a final a level result of AAAAB or better. [The B being for english lit.]

But surely there are no answers in philosophy? Just questions, and more questions.

Good luck finding a job afterwards. One of the scarcest markets at the moment.

I got 2 As and a B and a C (Mathematics woo!). But that was 3 years ago (so it has harder ).

All I care for now is my first class degree Not in Physics, thank god.

* Only at AS, though D: .

Gah, nice job with the 100%. Somebody at the girls' school we're partnered with got 100% on her 5 ASs which is insane and made me feel pretty inadequate.

I thought science jobs were in high demand at the moment though, because not enough people are opting for hard subjects? Certainly a good degree like chemistry is immensely more employable than all the other rubbish people are coming out with at the moment... if I go for maths, I think that ranks as the most employable degree of all at the moment, simply because it's hard.

Congrats Omi, and yeah, full marks in a philosophy exam? Kinda funny, I didn't think philosophers dealt in absolute truths.

Although from what I can gather, the philosophy course that's done at our school at least is bollocks. I tried to have a discussion about dualism and Descartes with some girl who does it and she didn't know what the hell he was, which made me want to cry considering he's pretty much the most heavyweight philosopher ever. All they seem to learn about is dumbass theologians nobody gives a toss about and their multitude of crappy arguments to try and reassure themselves about their faith in the Christian God... I'm glad I didn't take it and I love philosophy.

Theres so much pseudo-philosophy swimming around, I'm looking forward to taking it in university where hopefully this (usually religion-linked) false idea of philosophy should be dropped. Like my friend at another school told me he did philosophy and upon probing I discovered he actually meant religious studies. It hurts me a little bit. Descartes is only really heavyweight in one or two fields, which he has been mostly overwritten in by contemporary philosophy. But yeah still very heavyweight.

In my experience with the girls school I am coupled with girls do better essentially because of a much more obedient tendency to learn and regurgitate and say what the examiner wants, without so much new flare. In contrast I think boys on the whole do worse because of a higher tendency to laziness, but also a marginally more independent mindset meaning they aren't as satisfied as girls to spill out what they have been taught to say and finish with it.

And here I was thinking that philosophy by its very definition alone might've been one of those rare subjects which rewards you for thinking in interesting ways instead of learning a list of facts... ah well. Can't expect anything of the education system these days.

I wasn't talking about philosophy in particular there. Philosophy actually is oft like how you described it. For example in the theory of knowledge paper this year there was a real good question which they knew we werent prepared for, but required flare and thinking on our feet.
