You should break them down into 7-digit "words" and make some sentences.

Then drill your brain out when you realized all the productive things you could have been doing with that time, memorizing useful things :p

I think Mnemonics are the phrases that you use to learn pi.

Like: How I wish I could calculate pi.

Memorizing anything more than a few digits isn't, no.

3.14 really, as blasphemous as it may sound, works fine in a lot of situations. 3.14159 in nearly every one.

Most calculators have a pi function, so yeah, useless. I figure if you're doing anything that requires 10+ digits of pi, you're using a calculator for sure.

Pi is useless to memorize, if you memorise useful formules like V=4/3pi^3, then thats okay.

However, you would never need to be able to use more then about 10 digits of pi at most, or you could just do the approximation 22/7. Basically, all you need to know is where the pi button is on the calculator.

Mathematician would only proberly know about 5 digits of pi at most. The point is that memorizing digits is not a good way to spend free time.

Poog are you going to be a mathematician or study mathematics when you're older. If so I think there is more improtant things then memorizing strings of numbers.

Also, I heard that in physics most people only use 22/7 or pi to 10 digits.

The planet Earth exhibits all of these properties and therefore can be considered alive and its own single organism by the scientific definition.

does the planet Earth reproduce, well no unless you count the moon.

I'm just saying, if a situation ever arose, like if I was on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, or if someone had a knife up to my throat, and they asked me the first 60 digits of pi, i think that would be a little useful to know

then the guy with the knife would be like, oh, wait, he knows pi, maybe he shouldn't die

whereas in your case, he'd slit your throat.

You'd be in trouble if he wanted 60 places of e instead though.

Depends what he mean't by e. You know e^ipi=-1. So in different circumstance it would be easy to calculate. Also, if you knew that
e^x= cosx+ isinx, then it would be easy to calculate, espically if x=ipi.

A very special result of this is that
      e^ipi+1=0
Which, some consider the most beautiful and simple equation ever. Since it ties in the most improtant numbers, into a awesome equation.

Anway, I guess you could say, someones wrong on the internet.

I once wrote a program to generate digits of pi, then memorized the first 50, got bored after a few minutes though. I still remember those 50 digits.

That is one kind of mnemonic. But here's a better one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mnemonic_major_system

I made a quick pi-trainer yesterday and updated it today, partly because I got the idea for it through this topic. If anyone wants to try it it's here: http://gmc.yoyogames.com/index.php?showtopic=400005

Do you ever get the feeling that by memorizing complicated strings like that that you're pushing other things out of your memory to make room? ¬.¬
That's how far I memorized it as well. I just memorized out to there because that's how far out the calculator that comes with windows goes. Was it the same for you or did you stop there just by chance?
