Job Applications

So I'm not really experienced with these things, I've never really had to fill one out before, my last job was just "Hey, you looking for a job? Yeah? Ok, put this on and go do something". So, my question here is, are you supposed to lie on these applications? Like, some of the questions are incredibly broad and like there's no way you could answer them truthfully and still look good. Stuff like "Have you ever wronged anybody in your life? Have you ever stolen anything in your life? If a mail order catalogue shipped you an item for one dollar, but didn't charge you for it, would you go through the expense and hassle of mailing it back? If a vending machine gave you an extra item that you didn't pay for, would you put the money in the machine anyway?". I feel like it's a lose-lose situation. Like, if I answer truthfully, I seem like an unfit candidate, but if I lie, they'll obviously know I'm lying because nobody would ever do something stupid like putting extra money in the vending machine anyway. Any thoughts or opinions? I really need a job, but I feel like I'm screwed either way with these applications....

You're right... I've never filled one out before either. I would tell the truth on those kind of questions. Besides. If you put a coin into the vending machine it won't accept it as a gift/random payment. It will wait for an order which will then spend the money you put in there. You could mail it to the owner of the vending machine. But seriously, I doubt they would do it (the ones reading your application). So maybe, this is something like an IQ test, if you look at it from a certain angle. This is capitalism, if free stuff comes then you take it. The same with the catalogue.

Be as honest as you can. It may seem like those questions are rather ridiculious (and they kind of are), but they do serve a purpose. They can show how much of a stickler you are as far as "following all the rules," but they're probably also seeing if you're willing to be open with them. If you say "I stole a pack of gum when I was 6," they're probably not going to go AH! CRIMINAL! If you say you wouldn't put the money in the vending machine, that actually makes sense. It's the owner of the machine and/or the people who service it who are in charge of making sure that it runs properly. You're far more likely to come up against one that doesn't work... like one I went to yesterday. Someone had already put $2 in the soda machine but it wouldn't give the soda because the bottles were $1.25 it didn't have any change. Just tell the truth and explain your reasoning. I don't know where you're applying, but they could be using your answers to figure out where you would best fit in in their business. I was lucky to have a job pretty much handed to me. If you don't get this job, don't worry about it too much. My first interview flopped, but I still turned out okay ... I think...

No, you are supposed to LIE. They don't look at your answers, they look at your score, so just give them the best answer possible for every question.

Well you never know...My friend lied her ass off..got the job. The manager asked if she skips school, she said no..But she skipped school to go to the interview...Is he stupid????

Are you serious?? God damn, those questions are horrible! Wtf are they thinking? Whoever came up with those needs to be shot. Just answer whatever, and see what happens. It's not the end of the world if you don't get a job with that kind of place.

Is this by any chance a Best Buy application online...? Perhaps even for the new one in the south area? Not quite, it's a Future Shop. I'd really like to work there because it just seems like a good work environment, and one of my friends got an interview there and they pretty much told him all he would have to do is organize stuff on the shelves into alphabetical order, and be relatively up to date on new music, movies and games. Personally, I love helping people when it comes to this stuff, people come to me all the time asking for opinions on bands, albums etc, and looking for new bands to listen to because I listen to just about anything that's halfway decent, so I think it'd be like the perfect job for me. My friend never got a callback after the interview, so I don't think he got the job, so hopefully I'll get it, or at least get an interview with them. I ended up lying on most of the stupid questions like that, because Omnius' answer made sense.... When you work in an company as big as Future Shop, I'm sure they get applications all the time, but they're probably not going to sit down and read every single answer. Especially since it was an online application, and there was no room for explanation so you couldn't say something like "I stole a pack of gum when I was six", it was a simple "Yes I have stolen before" or "No I have never stolen". I'd say Ame would definitely be right if it was more personalized, like a smaller company, or a direct interview of some sort.... And yeah, those questions were pretty horrible.... Some of them were just really silly, I can't remember what it was, but there was one that asked something about like economics in other countries or something stupid, and I just remember wondering what the hell that had to do with getting a job as a shelve organizer. Meh.

If they can't find out that you did things like that, lie about them. That's what I did, and I got a job. Well, I did, until the economy fucked it over.

Hah I did the same thing for Best Buy =P Got the job... seasonal though because hes not sure I;m "enthusiastic" enough for selling cameras. Hmm, I'll jsut have to prove him wrong =P
