      Random Thought of the Day

      Drugs and Cookies

Marijuana is a better analogy for cookies, but other drugs may fit this as well. The following is my attempt to explain my views on drugs, using cookies.

For anyone who says drugs are bad. There are a lot of things that are bad for you. Also, there are a lot of drugs that are worse for you than the ones currently illegal. Theyíre only illegal because some people decided they didnít like them, and didnít want anyone else to enjoy them either. However, drugs have been around for much longer than the laws against them.

What if one day, cookies became illegal. Someone could argue that they are terrible for your health if you eat too many, and cause car accidents when people try to open cookie packages while driving, or when trying to eat them while driving. All valid arguments, as cookies are indeed bad for your health, and doing anything while driving increases your risk of being involved in an accident.

However, despite their illegalness, some people continue to bake cookies, in their very own homes which is strictly forbidden by the government, and is punished much more severely than if someone just had cookies on them, but wasnít baking them.

These same people sell cookies illegally to people who like to eat cookies. I mean, if you donít like cookies, you wouldnít buy them in the first place. However, because you can only get them illegally, you have to now hide your cookie habit from people, to be safe from legal action. This creates a bad atmosphere for eating cookies, and a lot of unnecessary stress. Also, without parents or the government promoting responsible cookie dieting, many people could easily over do themselves with cookies, and suffer the negative health effects.

To top it off, anyone who likes cookies and wants to eat some every now and then, but doesnít want to risk baking their own cookies (the smell of freshly baked cookies easily draws the attention of law enforcement), must now buy them from someone else who is baking them, at an inflated price to compensate for all the additional hassle.

People will enjoy cookies, and I donít think anyone has the right to ban them. However, with all things, moderation is key. It is possible to injure yourself, and even die from drinking too much water, and it has happened. The same goes for everything. Similarly, I think there are risks involved with everything, and people need to responsibly account for such risks when doing whatever the risky business it is that they do.

Also, there are people who despite the warnings, will still gorge themselves on cookies to the point where it is unhealthy and starts interfering with their life. These people do not represent those who enjoy a few cookies every now and then, and if anything, give all cookie eaters a bad reputation, as it is their problems that are in the spotlight. If there isnít a problem, chances are, things will go smoothly and not much will be noticed.

I get what your saying and i agree, its always the minority that ruins the fun for the majority, ex: in school, if a teacher says if everyone hands in there homework on time for a week they will buy the class pizza and have a party, and everyone except one person hands in there homework, then that person ruins the fun for the whole class.

by the way, very good analogy

All men whilst they are awake are in one common world: but each of them, when he is asleep, is in a world of his own.

I guess this means we all have to work together for maximum enjoyment in life.

I do agree with all of your analogy except one part...how often is moderate use? weekly? every few days? because every site I read up on says that its true that light smoking most likely wont effect your body in the long run, but smoking frequently has dangerous potential. I dont think eating a cookie or two every day would do that.

Moderate use is dependent on what is being used. I hesitate to give a definite answer for it, because everyone has different tolerances. For instance, I have a high metabolism right now, so my body would easily handle 4 or 5 cookies a day.

Basically, don't over do things, balance everything nicely, and you don't have to worry about what moderate use is. If you notice you spend all your free time eating cookies, making cookies, or talking about cookies, chances are, you're above moderate use with cookies.

      I can't has cookie?

...you can hate me now for that.

Interesting analogy. Some people might want to argue that itr doesn't have any effect like drugs, though it dies change your body chemistry in several ways (especially if it contains... chocolate *gasp offscreen*). It's particularly interesting because it's sort of the "legalize pot" arguments, only backwards, which just goes to show how ridiculous some of the arguments on both sides are.

      Great thread, Schmaven.

I maintain the position that no one but yourself should be able to tell you what you can or can't do to your body. But to strongly advocate for responsibility, not abstinence, as what is one man's trash is another's treasure. There indeed are very good arguments for either side, but when it comes down to it, it's up to you what you decide to do.

I believe that if people were taught and strongly encouraged to be responsible for whatever they do with their body, that we would have less problems than the current "avoid everything" strategy of dealing with drugs and the like.

Perhaps the reasoning for not teaching this responsibility is a lack of funding to put such programs in place. I just find it strange how many drugs are legal in this country (the US of A) that are more dangerous than the illegal ones. And even others that are often abused even more so than illegal ones, caffeine is an example of this. Although the effects of caffeine may not be too serious, or long term, I have not looked into it, but have had some first hand experience with intense migraines, blurred / fading vision, and a scarily random heart beat from caffeine.

I'm not saying avoid caffeine, but I was never warned about how drinking 3 energy drinks a day, and a lot of soda, is a large amount of caffeine, that has a big effect on your body. I learned this the hard way. That being said, everyone handles things differently, and what happened to me, is in no way guaranteed to happen to you.

      Random Thought of the Day

Multiverse Thoughts: I was thinking how everyone has their own perception of everything, and there's no way we can really know exactly how someone else sees things. So the universe as experienced by one person is different than for someone else. Also, each of us can decide to do anything at any given time, giving us infinite possibilities. Every situation has its limits on what our choices can be, but largely, those limits are self-imposed. When dreaming, there are no limits. On a graph, an infinite line is a dimension. 2D is all points from negative infinity, to positive infinity, in both the x and y directions.

So with our infinite possibilities at our fingertips, always changing into more infinite possibilities, based on what we've done, our possibilities can be thought of as another dimension, and our lives, as parallel universes. Our lives are our world, our universe, and we have a lot of control over our lives. We can believe whatever we want, so in a way, we are already in parallel universes, intersecting in this common place we call reality, where there is some consistency, or at least, continuity, where we interact with each other, and live. However, as two people will most likely experience the same event differently, each person will be in their own universe, that is whatever s/he makes of it.

Belief: Belief is important. In dreams, whatever you believe becomes reality, but in waking life, it's not just you believing things, so it's what the majority believe, or what is most strongly believed in each case that becomes reality. For instance, everyone believes in gravity, and there is gravity. A lot of people disbelieve that we can fly, and by ourselves, we canít. But in a dream, if you believe you can fly, then you can.

      Everything

I was thinking that the entire Universe could be one single consciousness, with the ability to do anything it wanted. But being a single consciousness, there would be no other consciousness to share things with, to provide a different view on things, and all the other great things that come with not being alone. So, to overcome this loneliness, this single consciousness split itself into separate consciousnesses, each with no knowledge of where it came from, or how it came into existence, to interact with itself and not be alone. Sleep is where we return to a similar state of being alone, in that we have an entire universe to ourselves to do whatever we please with. Being many consciousnesses, and not knowing how we came into existence, ie. how we became conscious, not how our bodies were formed, we have no other option but to interact with each other in some way. With each separate consciousness finding it's own way, not discounting influences by others and the environment that contribute to our experiences / life / who we are / how we act.

The cycle of being asleep and awake provides us with both worlds, the lonely one where we have ultimate freedom, and the one where we are not alone, and because we are not alone, are a lot more limited in what we can do, yet we can share our more limited existence with others. While awake, we can experience love, not just loving ourselves as we would in a dream, but the mutual love shared between two beings, which definitely the best thing/emotion/act(whatever you want to call love) I've ever experienced.

While you certainly can love your dream characters, this is similar to loving an inanimate object found in our waking lives. Your love for it may be real, but it can't love you back, regardless of what you may think. And it is when something loves you back, that the real power of love can be experienced.

      Elbow Grease

While cleaning dishes today, I started thinking of the saying, "put some elbow grease into it" and it made sense. For some reason it didn't to me before.

If you don't use your body, or your joints, whatever you aren't using, won't work as well given enough time. By scrubbing dishes, you're moving your arms a lot, mainly your elbows, which keeps them moving well. At least better than just thinking about washing dishes does. So in a way, putting some elbow grease into what you do, "greases" your elbows, keeping everything limber and able to move.

Hehe, you made the same sort of thread as me. Nice analogy on the pot and cookies. Also, if you had to buy them illegally the manufacturers could lace them with something else.

I'm usurping this and turning it into a place for everyone's random thoughts.

I've often wondered what we'd get if we combined Burns and Ame into one super person.

Ame is our resident, shuriken throwing, Ninja.
Burns is or resident, non-throwing, but nonetheless -crazy- cat lady.

I often picture an Ame/Burns combination as a version of that Crazy Cat Lady in the Simpsons in Ninja Garb, and better looking, throwing cats as projectile weaponry to incoming targets.
