Man killed by Security Guard in Oakland

I'm sure many people have seen this, and I'm sorry if there's already a thread about it, but it brought up an interesting point that I want to talk about

      Here's the video:

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmJukcFzEX4 (incase it doesn't embed)

So, these were BART police, bart being a subway station that goes from various parts of the East Bay all the way to the San Francisco Airport. And the question I'm asking is, why are these people allowed to carry guns?

In Argentina, Police officers aren't even allowed to pull their guns out unless they are being threatened by a deadly weapon. This is not because Argentina is progressive, it's because the people of Argentina flipped out over incidents like these and forced the government to change the laws. I'm reading stories about this, and the newspapers are like "Prosecution of Officer marks step forward in justice" and stuff like that, trying to play it out like it's this awesome thing that the sandclit who shot the guy has to go to court. This guy wasn't even a police officer... and he's allowed to carry a gun. It's ridiculous, I mean I've used BART and it doesn't always feel 100% safe but I think the BART police should be fined for taking their guns out unless their target is wielding a deadly weapon, as well. Not just security guards either, the police in general because I'm fed up with this, it's bullshit. We need laws to protect us from the men and women sworn to protect us.

In this country, the cops pull their guns out at traffic stops if the driver starts giving lip. I see it on TV all the time, and then the commentator tries to justify like "After the man starts making threatening gestures Officer Garcia is forced to show him who's in control of the situation. That'll teach him to... say things..."

Anyway those are just my thoughts.

Man, that is weird, but I've taken the BART before, and it goes right through the roughest places (doesn't get any more rough than Oakland when were talking about California.)

I got a little scare just walking to the station in a rich part of Berkley, but I'm also from Utah, so...

Yeah but I think having officers that carry guns should be enough to intimidate criminals, but allowing them to take their guns out for no reason just endangers everyone else.

True you do have some valid statements. I do agree that police officers should not be able to draw their weapon unless the circumstances call for it. Seeing as how a misfire could easily injure or kill an individual.

Indeed. For my long winter break, I've spent the past few weeks with my family in Berkely, CA which is at most a 10 minute drive from Oakland... there was a LOT of rioting going on over this incident. It was no misfire. The guy was handcuffed, and laying on his back when the nut job shot him in the back. This shit has me enraged. The stupidity of people.

If you look up the ex cop (I can't recall his name at the moment) you'll find that this is the third time he's shot someone, and I THINK it's the second time he's killed someone. And only now is he getting potentially charged for any of it. Long live the American fuckin' "justice" system.

In this video, you can clearly see and hear how BART police officer Johannes Mehserle shot and killed Oscar Grant in cold blood.

ahhhh, the other day I saw some news report about some riot that happened regarding the Bart police, people were smashing windows and all that....is this what that was about?

I don't think them having guns is the problem.....they are police, after all....even if only for the Bart.

every law enforcement agent should have a lethal weapon of some sort, otherwise, you can't stop a crazy/bad guy.

looks like this is just about the misconduct of a particular officer.

It's not just the misconudt of a particular officer. It's the mentality of the justice system. Cops think they can get away with anything, that they're superior.

I never said cops shouldn't allowed to have guns, just that they should be fined for pulling their guns out without just cause. It should scare them into realizing the citizens they protect can enact consequences if they mistake serving the public to scaring the public.

Everything works out in the end, sometimes even badly.
