Restaurants That Let You Pay What You Want

I thought this was pretty awesome.

There should be more places like this, around the nation.

$10 says it goes out of business...

That's pretty cool though...I wouldn't mind washing dishes for an hour to have some awesome food!

There's one near me that's been in business for ages. I've never been because it's a vegetarian restaurant. I personally, eat nothing but meat because I object to the cruel murder of plants for food.

I think most people end up offering something generous for it (possibly more than it's worth even) because they don't want to offend or look like a tightarse*.

*Although that didn't stop Rod Stewart from buying Elton John a bar fridge for his birthday, after Elton got Rod a car.

Hmm. That's cool but... what about the homeless bums and stuff (ha, not to be rude) who might take advantage to the point of ruining it for everyone. I guess these types of restaurants could only operate in certain locations...

If they tried that in my location, every bum, trailer trash, thug, and welfare baby in the metro area would flock to it every day. It would be the most packed restaurant in the area, few people would pay anything fair, and the people paying absolutely nothing would be rude as Hell to the employees for supposedly not doing enough. It wouldn't last two days.
How do you know you are not dreaming right now?

Reading that article made me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

The founders are good people. I completely approve if this idea.

I have to admit; I'd pay nothing, because I'm a horrible, horrible person.

What a wonderful idea.. and the fact that they don't even count what a customer left until after they've gone makes it even more remarkable that they don't get stiffed more often!

That's true. And no one will want them to volunteer sadly.

It's a good idea based on social reciprocity. I wonder what the quality of the food is and the tax benefits the restaurant may get for considering themselves "non-profit".

worked for Radiohead & Nine Inch Nails

unfortunately, I don't think the concept translates very well into physical goods and services

with music, you've got a whole heap of cruft you can sweep away
      record labels
      middlemen
      music stores
      etc. etc.

clear all those away, so it's just the artist selling directly to the listener and it's a workable model
each listener needs to pay, say on average 20p, for the artist to break even on an album

don't know about NIN, but people were paying on average £3-£5 for Radioheads album
      (they made an absolute killing....)

but there's not a great deal of outdated thinking, shoehorning of old business models into new areas, go-betweens and middlemen who do little but skim their profit off the top in the restaurant business

I'm pretty sure(if I understand this correctly) this is the same concepts.

      Replace record labels with owners
      middle men with cooks
      music stores with waiters

I'm under the impression that these folks work for free/low wage

Yeah, probably. But it's still pretty cool if people don't take advantage of it.
