While there's no set in stone detailed list of pre-requisites one must accomplish before becoming a staff member...there are things you can do to put you in good standing to be considered worthy for the job.
1. Post more on-topic than off-topic.
This pretty much goes without saying. Posting in newbie zone and helping newbs is the primary duties for a DG. Help alleviate the staff's job a bit by doing this and you'll get noticed sooner than you think. I would stay away from pseudo-modding though...it'd probably do more harm than good. Also, you need to establish yourself on the board with the community first. Who knows you? Who?
2. Create helpful (tutorial-like) threads in on-topic.
Assist newbs and LD novices in any way that you can. Have them PM you if they'd like.
3. Mind your emotions.
Notice how all the staff seem well tempered? It's because they pretty much have to remain cordial to the community (even to assholes) to set an example and assist people as politely as possible. Look at how many members are
currently online. Now look at how many guests are
currently online. Though you may not have known it...they're browsing these threads quite a bit and if they see that a staff member acted an asshole back TO an asshole, that might be the deciding factor on whether they should join or not. How leader's conduct themselves speak volumes. Mind your emotions.
4. Get to know the current staff.
PM them, take an interest in what their likes and dislikes are. This is the most important step, if you forget everything else, remember this one. I say this because potentially new staff member candidates are discussed and voted on amongst the current staff in a private forum. If you're cool with one and the rest hate you...you're pretty much screwed. DO NOT take an interest in them for your own narcissistic and superficial reasons. Be genuinely interested in them. I'm friends with a lot of the staff because we shot the shit in chat a lot or because we have common interests on the boards and therefore chatted via PM or on the board about those interests. I don't do this because I want something (Note: I do not want to become staff), I do this because behind those bold colorful usernames, they're just people to me. My friends.
5. Drop hints (after you have a firm grip on the above steps) that you are wanting to become a staff member of dreams.
Do this by telling a staff member that your close to to keep a watch on an opening for you and have them support your candidacy for staff in the private forum etc. Be creative with it. There are many ways you can do this. The point is that noone will know what you want unless you first make it known what you want.
6. (Optional) Build real-time relationships by hanging in chat.
Chat is a great way to build relationships in real-time as opposed to "forum-time". The community will rally behind you if they think you are up to the job and adamantly care about their concerns.
That's just one example. Xox and ClouD are just a few others (to name a few that I've personally witnessed become staff). Now with that being said...being on the staff isn't all you may think it's cracked up to be. I've seen several people get excited about making staff only to resign from it a few months later. Their reasons are their own but something I'm sure of is that the experience is different for everyone. The duties you did to get noticed now become required of you and if you aren't doing shit at all...that gets noticed to. Hm, speaking of which...anyone seen Wavefunction lately?
ba dum bum! xD
From what I see, you're off to a good start oniman. I've seen you posting in on-topic and helping newbs out which is good, just keep doing what you're doing plus a little bit more and eventually that should get you what you want. Presupposing you haven't crossed the current staff in any way already
.
