Yep. That's how it went, and that is a lot of why I think the movie is absolutely awful. However, you should have inserted "cheesy Hollywood one-liner" a few times in there and also "hokey goofy cringe moment meant to be taken seriously" several times to represent the long list of such instances. The ultimate cringe moment was when that lady saluted whoever it was with such a positive attitude. I cringe right now just thinking about it. And WTF is Will Smith doing being funny in a movie about an alien invasion? That is retarded. It alone is enough to destroy the movie. What urks me extra about Independence Day is that it could have been about the best movie ever if they hadn't Hollywooded it up so much. They took a phenomenal idea and top notch special effects and created something painfully pathetic. It might be the worst movie ever made. No, never mind "might be". It is official. Independence Day is the worst movie ever made. Ever.

I tend to view it as an accidental allegory of the death of Modernism at the hands of a more eclectic and humanist Post-Modern world rising up and toppling it from beneath.

But hey, if the majority of people liked it, it must have been shit, because people are shit and America especially is just a big, dumb heap of shit. Gee, I wonder why you guys didn't like this movie?

The worst movie ever made? Are you kidding me? No way. There are quite a few movies that are worse. Take a look at the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still for example. *shudder*

Well, I there's a difference between a movie being passively bad, in the sense that the people who made it simply have no skill; and actively bad, in the sense that the people who made it are so idiotic and/or evil that the film causes physical discomfort to the viewer.

To be fair I am just expressing my opinion; but I'm not being entirely serious.

I'd imagine most people outside of the U.S. did find it cringingly bad though. I understand it has value for the whole national pride thing, but outside of that sphere it just looks like a grotesque caricature.

The special effects made the movie, by the way. There are plenty of folks who are content with watching a film for the sake of seeing fantastical other-world things, even if the potentially good story is getting butchered by terrible writers. A giant massive GARGANTUAN alien craft that fires a city-destroying lazor? Where do I sign up? Look at Transformers. I saw it for no other reason than to watched the most digitally enhanced giant 'robots' destroy things, and it was every bit as pleasing as I had imagined. Not that Independence Day can be compared with it, it's merely an example.
