      The Stars Tonight

So a few minutes earlier, I stood outside and made sure my friend who lives down the street got home alright. It is night time here atm. So I looked up at the stars, and it caught me quite strange.

There wasn't a few, but there wasn't a lot. I saw a vertical line of three stars, and many stars around it. Strangely, all of the stars were 'blinking'. When the star 'blinked', it looked green at the blink.

      Can anyone explain this?

I think he would have realised that it was a meteor shower. He never said anything about shooting stars.

I don't actually have a clue why the sky would look that drastically different.

You MIGHT have gotten better answers from the science/maths section.

Vertical line of three blinking stars? Are you SURE you weren't looking at a telecom tower?

It's called "twinkling" not blinking. Stars twinkle. Ever heard the song "twinkle twinkle little star?" Yeah. Look it up. The three stars in a line are most likely the three bright stars that make up Orion's Belt. They are always the easiest for me to spot in the night sky.

You should look up at the sky more often. Seriously. Get out more.

It's an illusion caused by stuff in the atmosphere. The atmosphere can make stars look greenish and like they are twinkling. It happens mostly near the horizon because the closer to the horizon you are looking, the more atmosphere you are looking through.
How do you know you are not dreaming right now?

I'm sorry, did I offend you?Sorry I'm not an astronomer. And if you really think I should get out more, then that is a problem. It sounds like you spend all your days sitting on the ground looking up at the sky. You know, not everyones main focus in life is to sit on the ground and be a caveman.

Everyone has different interests, if your interests are sitting outside and looking at the stars, thats great for you. But you don't have to bark at someone just because they ask a simple question, that doesn't regard their interests.

You don't have to be an astronomer to see this same pattern of stars dominate the skies from Orion's belt every single year during this time. I agree with Aquanina you seriously do need get out more because it's pretty obvious by your questioning that you don't get out.

first thing I thought of was Orion's belt also.

and do you mean twinkling, or actual blinking(like the light going on and off)?

Lol...my bad.... I forgot some people on this site are just assholes.

I honestly do not understand why this makes me an idiot. Constellations do not fascinate me. So why should I go research them?

So because I don't research constellations every day, and I don't just stand outside blankly staring up at the sky, furiously trying to find a constellation, I am an idiot. I'm sure I get out way more than you Nina, and all you do is spend your time harrasing people that ask one single question regarding something they don't usually see, then you, need to get out more.

Now now, people, calm down. Best not fall out because of this.

You cannot call someone an idiot for not knowing what Orion's belt looks like. And as for seeing the same pattern all the time, well, maybe he lives somewhere with bad light pollution (like me), which means it is very rare to see all the stars at night. And it just so happened he saw this amazing rare sight once and he wanted to know about it.

Universal Mind did the right thing and actually answered his question.

Most people don't really look at the night sky. They just look at the vehicle or building they are walking to. They might get out all the time but never stand outside and look at the sky, or they might live where the sky can't be seen very well, like Slash said. In Seattle, the night sky is just a big cloud. What percentage of the civilized world would recognize Orion if you showed them a picture of it? I bet it's less than 20%. It's just a matter of caring what the night sky looks like and being where you can see it clearly. It looks like Muggler started to very recently. So, I don't think Muggler's question was idiotic. He just saw something for the first time that fascinated him and talked about it in a very non-rude way. Even if he did say something idiotic, why be shitty to him about it? Save the insults for the assholes who deserve them.

Thank you! Like honestly, I just can't grasp why people get so offended by this! I was just walking my friend home because my neighborhood isn't exactly so safe. While I was walking back, I looked at the stars and saw that they were flashing different colors. I have never seen this before and I just ASKED why they were like this.

And @ ShadowNightWing, if you would have quoted the rest of that post, you would see that she didn't answer my question. She just told me that I saw a constellation. Not why the stars were flashing different colors.

Shadow, I was talking about the hostility. And maybe the word "idiot" wasn't used, but I know an insult when I see one.
(By the way... I don't want to fall out with anyone over this, I just wanted people to stop saying bad things to people who do not deserve it)

And Muggler, just a little bit of information you might find interesting, the stars that don't twinkle are in fact planets I think (someone back me up on this, cause I'm not sure). But yea, most stars twinkle, and Universal Mind explained why (which I found interesting, cause I didn't know why they do it at first)

I like to look at the sky when there are tons of stars, it is such an amazing sight, maybe the reason I feel that way is because most of the time there is either clouds or too much light pollution from Glasgow.

If no one called the guy and idiot then you shouldn't have lied stating that someone did. Anyway...

      Wow. Moody as ever.

Muggler, seriously, just ignore her. She's bitching at you for absolutely no reason when you asked a perfectly sensible question.

Hypocrite much? Me and nina were arguing at first, and you just came in and joined her side. You could have just stayed out of it.

Why are you always the only one who post pictures like that? Isn't that what a troll does? He comes into a thread posting senseless pictures that has absolutely nothing to do with the topic. You need to smell the shit you're trying shovel out.

I didn't join anyones side. I would've given the same response that she gave you, in which I did. For some odd reason you were offended, over nothing.

      lmao @ this whole thread

Some of you guys really need to take yourselves less seriously and not get so easily offended by random remarks on the internet. Come on now, let's get some perspective, shall we?

Maybe it would help if we all went outside and held hands and stared up at the sky.

I am going to delete all the off topic posts. Stay on topic. Take personal convictions of someone being a troll, etc. to PM's. Thank-you!
