This man claims to have gone over 90 miles an hour in a Toyota Prius? |

So if none of you have heard, about a week or 2 ago, a man was driving down a San Diego freeway and he called 911 claiming that his car accelerated itself to over 90 miles and hour. He was also applying the brake pedal. |

My mom is worrying herself sick over this. She bought a Toyota Camry a week before this stuff started showing up in the news. She's afraid to drive it, but it's a brand new car, what can she do? Can't give it back, unfortunately. Bastards. |

I'm guessing the camry's weren't part of the recall? Plus, if it's brand new, I would think she could return it within a certain amount of time. |

The story looks bogus to me. A newspaper here did a little test, they got into a primus, floored the accelerator and tried hitting the brakes simultaneously. The car stopped. They also tried out two other ways of stopping the car, namely turning off the ingition and setting the car in neutral. Both worked. |

April Ryan is my friend,
Every sorrow she can mend.
When i visit her dark realm,
Does it simply overwhelm.
I'd side with Toyota on this one, except for the fact that all the "investigations" were done by the company itself. |

Maybe bullshit, maybe not. Of course Toyota is going to try to deny it. |

This guy might be full of shit, and I believe he is...but the rest of the claims are not. In fact the more I read about it, the more frightening it gets. This shit goes back ten years at least. My mom's car was recalled for the "mat" problem...yeah, ok. But here's the shady part...apparently during this recall they added a break override on the vehicle without telling anyone. Toyota is like the only company or something that didn't have break overrides. So why didn't they tell anyone they were doing this? It would have saved my mom a lot of worry. She had to talk to a bunch of people before getting a straight answer about what exactly they did to her car for this "mat" recall. At first they told her it was just standard, computer functioning stuff. So she kept looking for more information and found out that what they really did was add break override so that people could actually break if there is an electrical problem and the car accelerates out of control. The messed up part is that the company ignores any claims of sudden acceleration when the car was not able to be stopped by using the break, because they say this would not be possible. Contradiction much? |
