Yes, anything that is related to increasing awareness in the brain can be used to lucid dream. Yesterday night for example I set an alarm to wake me for MILD, unfortunately I had become lucid already and the alarm woke me from my dream . I think my brain had the intention of waking up and did so partially before the alarm had gone, similar to how you sometimes wake up before your alarm in the morning. This happens to be called the CAT method, maybe there is something to it.
I guess the same could have happened with yourself, you heard the noise but knew that you only wanted to wake up in the dream and so it provided just that. Often even the thought of a noise that I don't really recognize wakes me up, a noise that you recognize works so much better.
