      Using Light to trigger lucidity?

Well, i have recently replaced all the light switches in my house with automated ones (X10). I am able to program the lights to switch on or off at specific times, or after a certain time has passed (I'm terrible for leaving lights on).

Last night while i was sleeping, the lights in my room turned on. It was a error in programming that let it happen, but I did notice it in my dream. I then became semi-conscious about the lights. I was close to bieng aware of the dream, but didnt succeed.

So my question is, can switching lights on/off in the night, during your sleep, help trigger LD's?

      Thanks!

Your experience proves that it works. You have an automated signal that translates to your dream without waking you up, much like a NovaDreamer.

It works provided you know your REM timings otherwise you'd have a hard time adjusting the brightness because you wouldn't know when you are in deep sleep or light sleep or even REM. Deep sleep, stages 3 and 4 are the hardest to be aware of anything unless you are using halogen spotlights directed at your face at full blast.... This is one way to find out your REM timing http://www.dreamviews.com/community/...ad.php?t=66770 , your light should go off during stage 2 just before REM or REM itself. Btw is your system the X10 Powerhouse? Those have remote control function where you can dim the lights too, I don't have it but I seen it on youtube..really cool to install those...

Exactly. This is the exact function of the NovaDreamer. You've just managed to do it on a much larger scale. (And in a much cooler way. )

Default use of the NovaDreamer works by making the dreamer aware that he is dreaming but it can also be used to remember to do things in the dream instead of realising it's a dream. Light goes off...make Snowy Egypt appear....

I always have difficulty seeing in dreams, at best the images are blurry, like i'm without my glasses. Other times i see in black/white, very blurry again, and i have to feel my way around (its that blurry). On the night the lights occurred, i had a better than usual clarity. So yes, it did improve vividness/clarity. But that was just for one night. I did not LD though.

Yes, it sure is. They're pretty easy to install, and i like the benefits already. Kinda pricey, but well worth it.

I am going to program a light in my room to go on/off every night, and see if i can trigger more of these occurrences. But the question will be timing, when should i trigger the lights to go off? I typically go to bed at 10-11ish, and wake up at roughly 6:30. When would you guys recommend i turn the lights on?

I'm very excited to test these lights out, maybe this can aid me in getting another LD intentionally!

So how's that light idea going? You can start with 90min intervals and one hour intervals after like 5am and you'd have to adjust brightness to the point you don't actually wake up but at the same time aware the light has gone off.

I dont know if its just me or what, but i dont seem to see the lights anymore, and when i do, i wake up. I abandoned this idea a few days ago, as i am just a little too impatient. Maybe lucid dreaming is only for those who have time and dedication. I dont seem to have either of them.

But if you're interested in trying lights, they make work for you.

      Cheers!

Actually it isnt though. The NovaDreamer uses technology to detect when you're in REM sleep and then sends a cue, either flashing lights or audio (that isnt too bright or too loud to wake you up), that you can learn to recognize in your dream.
As he said, it was an accident and he just so happened to recognize the light was on without waking up. You could easily ask your parent who gets up for work at 4am to turn your light on when they get up(if you have one that is.)
The NovaDreamer sends you a cue whenever you in dream state, which is by far as good as your gonna get. Alot more complex then an automatic lightswitch though.
I'd see how it would work but i'd rely on the ND first.

You are right, BUT if you program the lights to come on later in the sleep cycle, say after 5 or 6 hours onwards, the length of REM periods is much longer than non-REM periods, so the chance of switching the light on during a REM period are very good.
Much cheaper than a any light mask.

well i definitely agree about the Cheaper fact, but definitely not with the cooler notion up there.
Anything i can use to trigger lucidity I consider a jewel.
one of my best triggers would have to be the scary movie before bed.
Try watching a movie that you think is REALLY scary so when you go to bed you have a very high chance of having a nightmare, then when you're getting chased by a monster or somethin it's like BAM, I'm dreamin.
then it's like, BAM, shotgun to the face, freddy.
