I had a very unusual experience with lucid dreaming about eleven years ago. I awoke one morning and decided to go back to sleep to have a lucid dream, but was concerned about being able to sleep while my sister was talking on the phone in her bedroom, which was next to mine. (Around this period I also took melatonin on occasion to help me sleep, as well as for lucid dreaming.) However, my intent to have a lucid dream was very clear, so I simply let my concern go and went back to sleep. After a short time I was dreaming that I was walking through a neighborhood with big, beautiful houses, and I suddenly became aware that I was dreaming, which caused the dream to become extremely vivid, colorful and physical-like. However, I noticed that my physical hearing was intact, and as I walked down the street in the dreamworld I could also clearly hear my sister in her bedroom talking on the phone! I found this to be humorous and fun, yet my focus was primarily on my lucid dreaming experience, and after several seconds my awareness of my physical hearing was disconnected. I continued walking down the street, enjoying the scenery, and then decided to enter a house. I found that it had a beautiful decor, and then the dream faded and I awoke. In excitement I told my sister about the experience, as she had been talking on the phone as I was dreaming. I was amazed but not surprised at how my mind had humorously allowed me the use of my physical ears while I was dreaming (even though it was just for several seconds), without letting the sounds disturb my experience and end the dream.
