      The term is RC or Reality Check. You will be able to search threads in Attaining Lucidity that are about this. The basic idea is you start doing something in real life that when done in a dream will create a dream effect, thus alerting you that you are dreaming.

      A lucid dream is a dream in which the dreamer is aware that they are dreaming. In a normal dream, the dreamer has no idea that what they are experiencing is a dream. The only difference is the dreamers state of awareness and ability to control their actions. Reality Checks are ways of discovering/confirming whether or not one is dreaming or not. They are explained in detail elsewhere.
