Thread: Why there are people afraid in lucid dreaming?

I told my parents and cousin about my recent lucid dream. I advice them that they should try it. They don't want because they are afraid.

im affraid aswell. its because nightmares and sleep paralysis tend to be very scary.

Are they religious? Some religious people tend to see this as something dark and sinister... I'm not sure why, but that's how they see it - though I do need to stress out that it's really only SOME of them. And also, some people just tend to think this is silly and a waste of time, so it's not that they're afraid, they're just dismissive of it. Others may have heard of OOBE and may feel like act like this is the equivalent of using an ouija board? I dunno. People are mostly afraid of it cause they don't know what it is and people tend to fear the unknown...

Hey. You don't need to be afraid. Lucid dreaming is actually a great tool AGAINST nightmares because, if you're having a nightmare and you get lucid, you can't change the dream to something pleasant. As for SP, it is pretty creepy, true, but it's not exactly related to lucid dreaming. SP is a bit like what people feel when they try to WILD, but it's not the same thing.

if your talking about astral projecting yes it can be scary but its just fear of the unknown. I believe you have to face your fears to realize there is nothing to fear

It is possible to experience all 5 senses in your dream, including pain. I read some posts here in this forum that some people had experienced the most intense feelings of pain in their dreams like getting shot at, or stabbed at. When I first started lucid dreaming, I was really afraid of this and almost made me want to drop lucid dreaming. I don't usually get shot at, or stabbed at in real life but it can happen in a nightmare and I was afraid I would actually feel the pain. But I got more confident in my ability to control my dreams and thinking, it will only happen if I expect it to happen and got over this fear

For the religious perspective there's the idea that dreams are messages from god and messing around with it is weird. Or something.

For myself it's the nightmares and anxiety and fear of pain. I'm afraid that I'll be stuck in imagination land and some force will be actively summoning up all the things I'm afraid of to scare the shit out of me, whether that force is my conscious anxiety interfering or something I haven't dealt with. I guess I don't trust myself.

Though with every lucid dream I seem to be getting more and more confident and optimistic.

I think some people who don't know what lucid dreaming is thinks it's scary because of the name. Lucid can be a creepy word! LoO0OoO0Oociiiiiiiiid. First impressions like this matter.

Haha that makes me laugh for some reason. I never thought it's a creepy word but now that you mention it it's probably because I've been familiar with the word since I was about 13!

I guess it all really comes down to people's background and association with the word or what associations it triggers for them. Because they haven't been able to do it for a long time many people think it is unnatural so it's that 'survival instinct' to be wary of things that don't seem 'normal'. The more they understand, the less afraid they will be, but some people like to put up walls before they give themselves a chance to learn.

For other people that are just so curious to learn everything they can fear of the unknown does not stop us
