      False Awakening to Lucidity

In most of my LDs, I'm just semi-lucid. But in the rare times that I've been clearly openly lucid (I literally think to myself, "Wow, I know I'm still dreaming, but this feels totally real. Time to party!") have all been during a false awakening. Like the regular dream melts into a false awakening and then I become lucid.

Ok, in a really embarassing example, I was making out with a famous actor in my bed (I wasn't lucid yet). Then I thought I woke up (it was dark), but I could still feel the guy kissing me. Then I thought, "ok, I know I'm in my room and in my bed, but there's no way that this famous guy is actually here". So then I became lucid and thought, "Yeah, I'm dreaming, but I don't care!" and continued the kiss fest. Then I woke up for real (alone ) and it was morning.

Ok, every time these LDs happened (that I've recalled), it's always been after a false awakening, and it's always been only moments before waking up for real in the morning (last REM cycle).

So my question is, is it normal for the most intense LDs to occur just prior to awakening from the last REM cycles? And during false awakenings?

      Any input is welcome, thanx!

Almost all of my most intense and vibrant LDs occur during the last couple of REM cycles.

I think it must be beacause your mind is much more rested and functioning at its best after all that sleep.

I don't know what it is about false awakenings. Maybe because your mind has tricked itself into thinking it is really awake and then kicks into high gear?

I had more false awakenings this morning too! I dreamt that I woke up and began writing in my dream journal! And, as always, I noticed that some words weren't making any sense, and I woke up immediately. Same with the others.

Yeah, I think you nailed it there. It's really like my mind knows it's a dream at that point and goes, "Now, let's stop all this foolishness and wake up for real."

I guess I just have to be suuuuuuuuuuuuper tired to hang on to a lucid false awakening. I'll bet that's it, seeing as how it's usually after a long pattern of insomnia that I have my best LD's.

thats what i had last night! false awakening is the perfect phrase for it, i knew i was asleep and then i thought i woke up, but what happened in the dream was so bizarre that i thought this cannot be real it has to be a dream!

but becuase mine was a bad dream, i tried to wake myself up about 3 or 4 times, but i cudnt do it i cudnt get out of it! so i THEN thought it wasnt it a dream!!

      i went the full circle!

      never had this happen before

      false awakenings... interesting!

When I started LDing, I would only become lucid from false awakenings. This changed after a few months though.

I've also noticed how your dreams get much more vivid after false awakenings. I think it's because you are expecting to wake up in the real world, thus you expect that everything will look normal and vivid (subconsciously, at least).

False awakenings can also be used to extend LDs and/or make them more vivid. Simply induce an FA by will whenever your LD seems to fade (you could try leaning backwards and plummeting to the ground). Sometimes, you wake up for real, sometimes you wake up still in the LD.

OMG, that's me as well. FINALLY 2 nights ago I had my first LD that WASN'T a FA. But I will definitely try your technique next time to extend my next FA/LD. Great advice, thank you!

      Hmmm.... Interesting idea odd2K

I fight like mad to hold on to it when the dream starts to fade. Next time, I will let the darkness take me and then immediately do a reality check when I "wake up".

Muffins to you for the idea! Really sharp!

My subconscious seems to use a false awakening as a tool to confuse me.
After I had that episode of speaking to my subconscious (and pissing him off), the next couple of lucids were immediately followed by FA's
As if its my subconscious trying to stop me.

And unfortunately, my false awakening 'checking' is not working
I can't seem to remember to do an RC when waking up
So usually my subconscious gets away with it

Once I get that 'on wake do RC' thing right, then the idea of inducing an FA sounds great

I think thats another reason why you go lucid a lot. False awakenings are used to trick you. It might do the false awakening when your getting close to becomming lucid so you happen to be in it when it happens. Your normally yourself in false awakenings too, its a lot easier being yourself than when your really into the dream as someone else.

False awakenings can be tricky but some times in false awakenings weird stuff will happen and you can normally notice them. There is weird stuff in all dreams but when you first wake up in your room its a lot more noticeable.

I think I've only once ever managed to notice an FA ... and that was because it was really obvious.
In the dream I fell off the bed, and there was grass and autumn leaves, etc. Was a giveaway since I had been lucid a second before.

I've been having false awakening since I was four years old and I could literally tell the difference by the time I was six then formatted in dreams where when I was still dreaming and standing in my dreams I knew I was still laying down and this converted into a exempt experience when I start dreaming in my lucid form I would always know I'm laying down in reality
