i agree with these guys. the nose plug technique defenately seems to be the closest technique to "fool-proof." hasn't failed me yet. then again, i've only had one lucid dream.

anyway, about the non changing text.. my guess would be that the text was something that was very important in the dream. or something that is very farmiliar to you in real life. when doing this technique you wanna look at something that is kinda unimportant, not like the name of a farmilar building like Publix.
